If you find out let me know! Haha
I don't think you can truely litterbox train them. Although my foster piggy is pretty neat and only messes in the back cage corners. Some owners claim success by using a "kitchen area" in their cage and their guinea pigs will mostly mess there.
I've also heard of others moving their guinea pig's poop in the litter box, but I don't know if that would actually work.
When researching on the Internet I found articles that say it is possible and has most definitely been done since they are trained in the wild not to go where they live. Unlike dogs and cats, I'm sure it is probably difficult to do and it would be most successfully when started as soon after birth as possible.
Just wondered if anyone had actually been able to train their piggies.
The honest truth that will be told to you is that no, a Guinea Pig cannot be litter "trained"
You can put a box near where you see the go poo the most (usually under hay mangers) and hope that they only go poop inside of those boxes. But, no, you can't potty train them per-say.
@GGLuv
They don't go potty near where they live? Domestic Guinea Pigs must be different then haha. The only place they CAN go poop is where they live!![]()
OMG I've tried potty training my piggies - it worked for my little girl for about 2 days. My little boy would literally move his corner potty so he can poop in the corner! I'm going to try the kitchen idea and see how it goes with fleece bedding once I get said fleece bedding...
Oops, my faux pax, I meant to say they don't go potty near where they eat....

I've never been able to figure out the "put a box in the corner" thing. Maybe it's just because my abby is a redecorating monster. She doesn't like things on the edges of the cage and will move them. She's a big girl, so she's pretty strong. I TRY to put their hay/litter box in the corner, but invariably it ends up in the middle of the cage, so I say whatever. I didn't notice a difference in the amount/spread of poop from before/after the litter/hay box was introduced.
@GGLuv , could you post links to those articles? I'm curious about them, as there have been very few, if any wild guinea pigs for many years.
You can try but it's up to your piggy. Basically putting the liter box where they poop most. Making sure to start off with branded new clean bedding.washed fleeced with no traces of urine smell.then using a different product for the inside of your liter box.I suggest yesterdays news it is a all natural non toxic cat litter, which is much cheaper than care fresh.plus it controls odors and clumps when wet so easy to spot clean.it took2 Weeks straight to get them used to it .when you do all the above keep close watch on poops just puck them up and putt them in the litter box.I would spray safe cage deodorizer where they peed.or when I would see them about to pee I would touch them so that they move and keep doing that till they got in the litter box.my litter boxes are in the corners they go most and it's under a grid covered. There wil be accident s you cannot fully train them.they basically deicide whether or l not they want to go through with it. Good luck
My two boys have floor time and I don't put anything on the floor I bring the litter box down to the floor and they go pee and poopin there not on my floor again it is not perfect but certainly much better. They will have accidents but it's normal h just keep up with spot cleaning
My pig is more like cage trained. When he roams around the house he will hop back in his cage and poop and pee only there. I don't have to worry about him pooping or peeing on my carpet. I never trained him to do this, he just does it himself which is fantastic.![]()

What type litter boxes do you guys use. I was in PetSmart today and they had one for $17.
I just have a tub from the dollar store looks like a smaller cat box and I put it front of their hay and pellets. So much less pee and poo all over the fleece. I love it! I just put carefresh type bedding in it and swap it out every two days or so and change the whole cage once a week. I have a little bendy log looking this that I made a bridge with to help them in a out.
