Questions On Alfalfa Hay

Hi, my new guinea pig is only 6 weeks old, and so im gonna get her alfalfa hay, but after quarintine her cage mate is like a year old, so how can I stop her cage mate from eating it and only her? Also, my boars are a 4 month old and a year old, do I still have to feed the 4 month old alfalfa hay?

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

Her cagemate should be fine eating the alfalfa hay. If you'd like, separate the hay into 2 different piles-mix the 1st one with timothy hay and set it by the older piggie. Then when your younger piggie comes out to investigate, give her the pile of only alfalfa. If the younger one decides to eat with her cagemate, she'll still be getting alfalfa.
Hopefully this helped-I know the other members will probably have other suggestions.

Good luck!

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

I have read that half of one and half of the other mixed together is fine.

Well, since she is a year old she will be fine with alfalfa. If she is more like a year and a half- mix it.

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

Mix timothy and alfalfa or put alfalfa in a place only the baby can reach it like a smaller pigloo or something. Is the adult on timothy or alfalfa pellets? Any dietary changes should be made carefully.

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

You can put the alfalfa mixed in with timothy like every week so the older one won't get too much. Or you can take out the baby for floor time and put alfalfa hay in then.

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

Guinea pig pellets should be made with some kind of hay - alfalfa for younger piggies, timothy for older ones. It should be the number one ingredient listed. If it's not, then you need to change pellets.

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

What brand of pellets do you feed? Most are either alfalfa or timothy based.

Re: Questions On Alfalfa Hay

For the boars, you can just give straight grass hay as alfalfa hay should only be fed for the first 6 months and your one boar is about 4 months now. If you want to keep supplementing the younger boar then feed him some alfalfa during a separate floor time. For the baby, mix about 1/3 alfalfa with 2/3 grass hay and then the baby and adult can both eat it that way.
