Careless Got myself into a sticky situation here.

We need more prefixes, this is really a Need To Rehome, a Looking To Adopt, and an Advice..all in one. This is also a bit of a rant, but I am rather upset.

People who abuse animals hold a very special, dark place in my heart.

The story begins as I was browsing Craigslist the other day, looking for a nice-but-cheap guinea pig cage because i'm facing a dilemma:

I'm taking our class guinea pig, a teeny cavy who is almost a year old, home for the summer and I don't have a proper cage. When i'd take her home for the weekend or something, she'd stay with my rabbit, Sadie. The two'd get along great and snuggle together for the first 2 days, but if it was a 3-day weekend or something, eventually the piggy'd get bored and start messing with Sadie. Summer is long, and so naturally that agreement wouldn't work out for the entire time..or even a week.

I stumbled upon this one listing for a cage, that said it came with a free adult female.

It's always sketchy when people say it like that.. I mean shouldn't it be the other way around?? but regardless, the pictures looked alright, and i've been looking for a companion for my little one for quite a while.

well, when we get there.. both the cavy and her cage are in HORRIBLE condition. when the mum told the girl to take the piggie out, the girl made this disgusted face, rolled her eyes, and grabbed the piggie by her stomach with one hand. the way she offered her to me? upside-down and flailing.

    containing my rage,
I listen as the mum tells us how sad they are to see her go and says how they've spent sooo much time with her and she's sooo well cared for and she hopes I will continue to care for her. She then asks if I have other pets. when I say yes, she says..in a disgusted voice.. 'oh, so she'll be just a pet to you?'

through the glass door, I saw a family member kick their cat halfway through the conversation.

She wanted $20 for the cage and fixtures, some cedar chips that the lady said she LOVES, some expired alfalfa pellets, MORE expired alfalfa pellets, and some unopened but still expired timothy hay. Yayyy. when I say expired, I say 'oh look it says Best Used By at least two months ago'

After we left, I put the piggie in my lap. She really was a sweetie. Terrified at first, but then she realized I wasn't going to kill her and was happy. Dandruff, dirt, and tons of hair came off on my fingers. I instructed my friend(who'd graciously agreed to drive me there) to pull over at the nearest trash bin.. nothing that lady had given us, except the cage, the igloo, and the water bottle. And the piggie, of course.

The cedar bedding was quality stuff. It made our eyes water the entire way to the trash bin, which we found after about 10 minutes of driving. Into that bin, I also dumped the contents of the cage minus the pig and the supplies. About 3 months worth of guinea pig poop, wet newspaper, and maggots.

My friend and I dropped just her off at my boyfriend's place, and went to another friend's place to work on the cage. It took an entire half-gallon of ammonia to clean that thing. Most of you cannot even begin to imagine how terrible this cage was, and if you can I am really sorry. To give a small taste of how terrible, i'd like to inform you all that when I initially poured the ammonia in, there was smoke coming off and I was terrified it was reacting with the plastic. After the smoke cleared, I was ecstatic to find that the poop was what had dissolved, not the cage. xD Spending 4 hours coughing and dying over a thing of ammonia with a PAINT SCRAPER isn't exactly the best way to spend an afternoon..but it was well worth it not to put her back into such a terrible cage again.

Examining her feet, I see that her back left one has almost two-inch-long nails..and that all the other ones have been newly-clipped. How beautiful, the people were trying to impress me. the fact that they let them get that bad shocks me. the fact that they forgot one, well.. that's also a bit sad..but i'm almost glad they did because that almost underlined how much work and care this piggy'd need.. when the nails were trimmed, they were brittle and CRUSHED rather than neatly coming off like a healthy animal's nails should.

Then my boyfriend texted me the horrible news: 'she' was a He.
I hadn't bothered to check, simply out of shock, and probably wouldn't have turned my back on him even if I HAD known..

SO, now you see the dilemma. I can, and plan to, nurse him back to health. I have more experience with animal husbandry in general than with cavies specifically, but I learn fast and know how to research. He's already making progress, though. After a bath, a couple hours of being lovingly petted, and some better food(he REALLY seemed to enjoy the fruit my boyfriend gave him!), he seems a lot happier and is definitely a lot softer. Giant flakes of dandruff aren't spewing everywhere, either!

Advice, please? I shall post pictures of the poor baby a bit later..
and if anyone knows of someone in northern Virginia that would be willing to take him... I know there's already a huge overpopulation, and I saw plenty of cute young sous that i'd love to adopt as a companion for my cute young sou. But before I even think seriously about trying to find my piggie a friend, I need to find a HOME for this other one.

I've moved your thread here. If you need to make a thread for this pig to be adopted, you can make a new one over in adoptables with the pertinent information. Since this thread is more of a rant type thread about you taking in and the conditions of this poor piggy, it really doesn't belong over in the adoptables section.

Use vinegar full strength instead of ammonia. You can leave it in the cage overnight and it was neutralize any left over dried up urine. Make sure he doesn't have any maggots on his back end. Guinea pigs can get flystrike which is fatal if not quickly treated.... Guinea pigs should never be housed with rabbits. One kick from rabbit can kill or maim a guinea pig. From the way you describe him, I'd also be concerned about the possibility of mites or lice. A vet check by an exotic vet might be your best bet. It was really good of you to take that poor little guy in. Good luck finding him a forever home.

I didn't HAVE a whole night, I had a cavy without a place to stay xD
but thanks, that information will probably come in handy sometime. (:

and I did, I poked, prodded, and examined every inch of him when I bathed him.. he turned the water yellow, and not from pee, either. DX
I really wish I had taken a 'before' picture..

he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, and I didn't see any bugs..
I was worried, too, so I checked his hair throughly.. do pigs mind//notice mites?

and yeah, I know. Dx my rabbit has the highest patience for my piggie ever, but i'm scared she'll accidentally do something bad. I was actually looking on Craigslist for a cheap cage(don't worry I take her out for floortime and laptime a lot since i'm home all the time) when I found him. I was also looking for a little girl, though, and will continue my search once I adopt him out. Next time, I hope to NOT find another abused male. >.< I already have an abused beardie adoptee and then this poor boar here, so I have had all the poor little abused babies I can handle for a while. But of course, me being me, if the next 'girl' I check out also happens to be male.. *sighs* if they're in terrible conditions it's likely i'll take them in, too. There seem to be a lot of homeless pigs in my area, though, so I don't know how easy it'll be to find a (good) home for him.. ):

Seems like you've have taken on a lot lately, with all the sick animals.

I suggest reading up on basic guinea pig and rabbit care. Have you read the information posted on this site and Guinea Lynx? A good resource for rabbits is House Rabbit Society Rabbit Care Guide . Rabbits need a really huge cage, or else need to be free range for a major part of the day. There are some really nice rabbit cages in the photo gallery of this site.

my beardie was fine, just going through a bad shed..
also I didn't realize that baby food made their poo like that, asked my BD.com friends and apparently that was normal.
Grumpy from shedding+baby food= makes a beardie appear sick when it's really not.. even the newbie is eating on her own(and LOTS!) at this point, so all of those babies are okay.

    and we have a microscope somewhere around here, so I was thinking of just using that to check for mites instead of planning a vet visit just yet. If we don't find anything then she's definitely going in, cuz that means she probably has worse problems.. everyone's so busy recently though and I can't drive yet! Gah! I am too old to not know how to drive, but public transport is just so much cheaper and more convenient around here ;^;

Your post makes me SO mad! Not at you, but at the people you got your little guy from! I'm so glad he is starting to get better care with you. I have no advice-I'm just starting our journey as cavy slaves and don't have any piggies yet, but wanted to say thanks for doing what you can for him!

If you are in NoVa, check with a rescue to see if they'll take him. Just keep looking too, he'll find his perfect home soon!

This makes me want to be an animal cop- like the TV show? Only I would be a guinea pig cop.

OMG could you do reptiles too?
PETA//animal control in general don't count reptiles as animals! D:
you could be the animal cop of the animals that no one finds worth protecting(but totally need//deserve it).

    haha, if only ):

haha, if you were mad at me i'd just be confused and put up a cute video of me and the piggie to make you un-mad. ;p

My cousins seem to have backed out on me (long story),
so I need to keep looking. Dammit, they would have been PERFECT,
    but that's life I guess.

And yes, I live in NoVa, but I really do not trust those shelters. >.<
they have soooo many piggies and I have never heard of anyone actually getting a piggie from one of them o_O

and if I ever decide I want to get any pet from a shelter in the future,
(I prefer craigslist though because that way you're often REALLY resucing an animal) they'll be all 'have you ever given up a pet to a shelter'
and I would have to say 'yes' and that would be awful..

also I kinda wanna KNOW who he goes to, ya know?
I have grown rather attached to him. :3<3
he's so freaking cute and sweet~~

Mites burrow underneath the skin so just putting a hair under the microscope probably wouldn't tell you much. Vets usually do a skin scrape to check for mites but even that isn't always the most effective.

I took a really fine comb and got some dead skin//hair from 3 different locations on and around her butt.. (eek she hated it so bad ;^; )..
she bit me twice, but I don't think she has mites at least ._.,

It might actually have just been the fact that she couldn't get comfortable.. I had them in a makeshift cage with a rabbit and not enough space and bars for them to stand on.. I know for a fact that kids and people, myself included, tend to shuffle and itch if they can't get comfortable.. Debut of their new home was yesterday, and they seem to be pretty happy with it.

is that okay, or should I still take her into the vet?

Your posts can be somewhat hard to follow, with the emoticons or whatever you call them. I am not sure what the problem is here anymore. You keep referring to the same guinea pig as a she and he, or are you talking about two different pigs? Is this pig still having problems?

Skin scrapings just don't give an accurate diagnosis of mites.

Oh, sorry! I am talking about a different pig. The boar I originally made the thread about is fairly healthy, as far as I can see. I just mentioned one of my sows and the conversation turned to her possibly having mites.. I think she's fine now, though. She doesn't seem to have any issues now and I called every vet around me; cheapest I could find was $75. And given that I do not HAVE $75..bleh. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort now, though. It appears she just hates having her butt touched, which isn't TOO abnormal.

How DO you check for mites, then?
I used NO smilies in this passage, except maybe this one.

Thank you for clarifying, I too was very confused. Anyway, every piggies I've have doesn't like their butt touched either. You could still treat both pigs with ivermectin just to be sure.
