Talking Adopting a baby boar in May!

Hey guys! I must've written a million posts about this already but I went again on Craigslist today to see if anyone was looking to rehome their guinea pigs as an individual and I found this ad!

    LONG HAIRED GUINEA PIGS
    LONG HAIRED GUINEA PIGS

I looked at it, read through it, and sure enough they were available separately! The babies were born on March 26, 2010 so they're barely even a month old but according to the lady that I talked to, she says that they're about 3 weeks old and already eating hay and pellets and drinking water on their own. So adorable! (She posted up videos of the babies too)

I asked her straight up if she was a breeder and she said absolutely not. She told me that she had gotten one of the guinea pigs from a lady and she saw the mother guinea pig there. She asked the lady why was the mother paired up with a male in the cage and the lady responded so that she could breed them. The girl was so horrified and thought that was so sad that she convinced the lady to sell her the mother too but the mother was already pregnant when she was already bought home so... hence the babies!

If you look at the videos, the babies are really precious but I'm getting the male baby guinea pig because my current piggie is also a male. I'm so excited! The woman's moving at the end of May so she's looking to rehome all of her guinea pigs. If anyone of you are interested, she lives in Newark, NJ area. I live in Brooklyn in NYC but I'm going to be making the trip out to Newark to see her and take the baby. She's asking for a rehoming fee of $45 for those of you who are interested.

P.S. - She told me that the male baby was the cutest of them all because he's a silkie and a variety of colors. Haven't seen the actual picture yet as I couldn't identify it on the videos but I can just imagine that he will be ADORABLE!

The lady just sent me some pictures of Brownie - she calls him Brownie and I was going to name my next piggie Brownie regardless of whether or not he was actually brown, LOL - and he is SO adorable! I would post them on this thread but I don't really know how to... If someone shows me, I'll let all of you see my future baby The lady was really nice to hold him for me until next month when I will be able to go meet up with her at the train station in NJ and get him.

Would I still have to quarantine the new piggie? From the looks of the pictures, he lives in a C&C cage with fleece bedding and is less than a month old. He appears to be very healthy but I know that appearances can be deceiving. Should I still quarantine him just in case? Or can I skip that part and just introduce him to my Hurley? It'll be so cute to watch them two together, one big and one tiny furball .

I would still do it since she seems to have a lot of pigs. If just one is sick the rest could be. Plus it helps you bond with the new little guy one on one! It also helps him get just a little bit bigger!
    I'm not expert though!

Re: Adopting a baby boar in May!

Yep, I will definitely be home in NYC by then from college So excited; can't wait to meet the little guy! I already got all the stuff that I need - an extra water bottle, food bowl, and I bought a new hay rack (under-shelf basket from Dollar General) but I might have to baby-proof that as I don't know how big he'll be by then so I'll just have to see

Daisysmom, if you're looking to adopt another guinea pig, she has female babies too. There was only one male baby so I took that one because my Hurley is a male. Her babies are quite adorable too and she sounds like a very nice person over the phone and through email. She was nice enough to send pictures at my request and then said that she'll be sending more later on of how he looks now.

    Can't wait, can't wait!

The male that I'm adopting is the brown multi-colored one. He's the one in front. Isn't he just absolutely adorable?!

Re: Adopting a baby boar in May!

I'm glad to hear you were able to find a pig to adopt.

Yes, still quarantine for three weeks to be on the safe side. If he were alone and not with any pigs at all this time that she's holding them for you, you could skip quarantine, but he is with other pigs so be safe and quarantine. It's a hassle, but it's worth it to protect the health of the newbie and of your resident pig.

I also hope, as I mentioned yesterday, that this is something you've really thought through and not a decision that seemed to be as sporadic as the decision to make the trip to the rescue to adopt over the weekend or whenever you'd gone.

He's definitely a cutie and I hope it all works out for you and Hurley.

Re: Adopting a baby boar in May!

I admit that last weekend I'd gone to the rescue on a sporadic decision. The intentions to adopt the guinea pig were the same but the timing, I regret, was not unfortunately.

Fortunately this time, I have made the decision to take in this baby male guinea pig and it is not a sporadic decision this time. I have already made arrangements with the lady, gone through all the routine questions with her ("How old is he? Has he been separated from his mother? Are you a breeder? How did you come to get them? What kind of cage/bedding are you using for them?" etc. etc.) and she has answered every one of them to the point that I feel comfortable with deducing the fact that she isn't a breeder. She has a 3x6 C&C cage with a 1x5 kitchen area and a 1x3 something else area. Correct me if I'm wrong but a breeder would not be treating their guinea pigs THAT well, right? Or maybe it's just my antagonistic attitude towards breeders. She also has fleece bedding which I saw from the videos and the cage, so I'm very excited to say that it looks like I will be adopting a very healthy baby boy.

Of course, I will quarantine him just to be on the safe side. No, she hasn't separated him from the females unfortunately but she guaranteed to me that he hasn't tried to hump the mother or any of the female siblings as she is home with them almost always. I don't know how true is that but seeing as how she took the mother out of a bad breeding situation, I can believe her.

I just got the email from the lady today. She told me that she was thinking of keeping the baby boy and giving away her two original guinea pigs instead because the landlord might let her keep one. I was so upset when I found out but I guess that's life...

Oh no, I am so sorry.

Not sure if this would work, but the place I am getting our new girl from is in NJ, about 45 minutes to an hour from me. Maybe she can meet you somewhere closer, I am only 15 or so minutes from Newark, so maybe there is a guy there. There are a bunch of baby boys there. If you look on petfinder it is Budd lake, NJ. North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue Inc. There are also a few others in NJ too.

Just another option. To be honest something in her desctiption on CL and your story from her something sounded funny, but I am overly cautious with CL, .
I hope you find your perfect boy

Re: Adopting a baby boar in May!

She was all set on holding the baby boy for me and giving him to me but then today, she emailed me and said that she planned on keeping it for herself because she had grown attached to him. I told her that I still really, really, REALLY (no really, I added 3 "reallys" just to get my desperation across! ) wanted him and she told me that she also really wanted him too because he was her favorite one from the litter (all the different colors of fur on him) and because I guess since he was the only one left after she'd given the rest away, she bonded with him and stuff like that. I don't know. I'm still pretty upset about that but she told me that I should've gone to take him earlier. I was like, I asked you to hold him for me and you said okay! You never said anything about going back on your word! But I guess that's just life. I'm upset because I was really looking forward to taking him home but I'm not that upset. Life goes on and plus, there's a lot of piggies out there that need a home with me

I'm just curious: What about her description on CL sounded funny? I asked her straight up if she was a breeder and she said that she wasn't, etc. etc.

I've noticed the guinea pigs on petfinder.com that were located in Budd Lake, NJ. Is Budd Lake pretty close to NYC? Do you think if I asked for them to meet me in Newark, would they do it? They have a lot of beautiful guinea pigs there, I've noticed, but I don't have a car. It's only NJ Transit and city transportation for me all the way through

I'm not sure, I just remember reading it the first time and read it again becuase something seemed off. I will go read it all again and see if I remember.

I would email her, she got back to me and seemed so nice, there are 3 foster homes where all the guinea pigs are, the one is a bit closer to me than Budd Lake? I am not sure what their policies are for transportation, but it is worth a shot right!?

Re: Adopting a baby boar in May!

It definitely is worth a shot, of course Their guinea pigs all look so sweet from the pictures on petfinder.com

Well, I guess I'll email them. As for transportation, I'm sure I can beg one of my friends to drive me - I just pay a little extra gas money But it really sucks not having a car even though I have a license (my parents, no my BROTHER only lets me back out of the driveway in my dad's car) and my boyfriend still didn't get one yet. Sigh* The downfalls of sucking at driving, .

I'm still not sure as to what was so weird about the guinea pig listing as it seems like she seemed to be taking pretty good care of them on the videos that she posted. Let me know if you ever get a chance to check out the listing=)

But I'll definitely email the lady in Budd Lake and see what she says. If all else fails, I will probably check with my local shelter. Thanks for your help!
