A Herd of Boars??

I currently have 2 boars, Milo and Pepper. They are around 6 and 4 months, respectfully. I acquired each pig separately (about 1 month apart from eachother) and they bonded with very little squabbles. They get along wonderfully and only on rare occasions will rumblestrut towards eachother or try to mount.

Well, as you all well know, its hard to stop wanting more piggies!!!

I am finding myself VERY tempted lately to add a third to the herd. I know that pigs are social animals, and something is just tugging at me and making me feel like my herd isnt complete!

So...just a few questions:

Has anyone tried adding to an already bonded pair of boars?
If so...did you adopt younger? older? same age?
Is it possible to successfully add a (fixed) female?
Any tips/tricks/feedback?

Right now Milo and Pepper are in a 5x2 C&C. Could this cage size work for 3 pigs?

Re: A Herd of Boars??

That would work. I recently just added a third pig.

Re: A Herd of Boars??

The only help I can give is my own experience, which is a little bit of a reverse situation.

Tahiri and Kimi were together, both females, and Leonidas wouldn't get along with any males, ever. As a result the rescue neutered him and moved him in with Kimi and Tahiri. They get along splendidly, so I really think personality is more of an issue to consider than gender in most cases. (Assuming that all risk of pregnancy has first been eliminated, of course!)

Re: A Herd of Boars??

I have four boars living together right now. The first two I acquired at the same time, but they eventually needed to be separated after a fight led to a pretty big gash. I got my third boar from someone on Craigslist and introduced him to Lincoln. Then a few weeks later I acquired two babies from another person on Craigslist and was able to successfully introduce them both to Lincoln and Franklin.

So...I have Lincoln, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton (hammy), and Jackson.

Lincoln, Franklin, Hammy and Jackson all live together just fine. There is normal dominance behavior but no chattering and no fighting. Jefferson must be housed on his own for now until he grows out of his adolescent stage. Once he's done with that I will try introducing him to the rest again.

I can't say anything special about how I got it to work. Definitely follow all the directions on introductions. The more room you can give them the better and try to stay away from enclosed hiding spots.

I think I've been pretty lucky with the four guys I have. However, I'm a bit concerned for when Jackson and Hammy begin their adolescent stage. They are only about 6-8 weeks old so only time will tell.

Good luck!
