Alright, my g-pigs and I have been together several years now and it seems as of lately they just have fun slobbing their water out of the bottles and onto the floor making a big mess. I thought it was the water bottles being old, so bought new ones. Well no such luck, I watch one of them and he doesn't even drink it most of the time, he just sits and let's the water come out until it's all over. Then sometimes it just seems like he is angry at the water bottle tube for even being there and just attacks it. Sometimes they even like to throw their bottles off the cage and see what the carpet looks like when it's all wet! I know they do this out of love for me and just want to give me things to do when I look bored to them. It's not just one pig it's both of them. At this point, I have looked in their mouths and their teeth are in good order with no obvious abnormalities. I think it is just them being pigs and maybe they are bored and want to make their living quaters into a swimming pool or just like to play with the water bottle. So at this point I am looking for advice of some sort of cage-mod or tip that could help me keep their cage a little cleaner because I guess I just have to deal with the fact that they do it to drive me crazy. Sweet little pigs with devil horns. I have heard of putting a brick or paver under the spout of the water bottle and was wondering if this is has been a successful solution for anyone. ![]() Thanks |

I had some small animal potty pads left over, and I folded one up and put it under the water bottles and that seemed to work for a while. It kept the fleece from getting wet, but then they decided they wanted to pee on it as well. So it didn't work any longer. Now that I've redesigned the cage (for, hopefully the last time) I hang both water bottles above one litter box (the hay rack hangs over the other litter box). I dump the litter every day (although keep a bit of peed-on litter in the box) and that seems to work too. But then again, my pigs aren't trying to convert their cage into a water park like yours are |

I don't mean to trivialize your "problem" here, but this was just so unbelievably unintentionally FUNNY to me SORRY LOL. Anyway, I have ONE pig who plays devil with my three water bottles but NOT to the extent YOUR devils do LOL. She has dragged one off the cage onto the floor and attacked the others but not to the extent she makes a mess as you have. I am sympathetic to your problem here but can offer NO advice but just had to tell you how FUNNY your story relating IS!!!! I could just PICTURE it going on inside my head and it was just too funny SORRY Thanks for the laugh and I HOPE you find the answer shortly. |

No problem really. My saying in life is if "I don't laugh I'll cry!" It is actually funny though irritating at the same time. I'm glad I could bring a laugh to someone's day. Guinea pigs are good for funny stories. I have gotten two good ideas so far being the litter box under the water bottle and the stones and bricks. It's funny because I do bathe them about once a year, and of course they hate it, but so long as they are in control of the water works they seem to love to play. All creatures great and small...are capable of making a big mess! :-) |

If it makes you feel any better, "Doris" (the piggie we named after my Mother - who is not impressed! ) purposely pulls down the water bottle and drags it into her house where she drains it, pees on it and rolls around in it!Not awesome! We added a 2nd water bottle and she does the same thing!! We added a 3rd bottle - knowing a 3rd bottle won't fit into her house...she drags it behind her house to keep it away from Samantha!! I think my pigs need therapy! |
