Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I adopted a new pig (MooMoo) about 1 week ago, Kiada and her are in a 3x3 cage which is split down the middle. \i adopted MooMoo right as she was coming out of quarantine with the lady i got her from so she wasn't really exposed to other pigs until a week ago. i was just about to go to bed and i heard someone being sick, i looked and she had thrown up a tan colored liquid, only a small amount but still there, I'm not sure what to do there is not vet i can take her to right now, could it just have been from something she ate (new veggies) or maybe one of kiada's poop's got on her side of the cage and she ate it, I just want to know that she's going to be ok, she's only done it once so far. She's now eating so i don't think shes hurting I just want to know she's going to be ok. thank you |

Are you certain that she threw up? I did not think guinea pigs are able to vomit. |

Cavies don't vomit, sounds like diarrhea, which can be very serious. If this wasn't an isolated episode she is likely to need a vet visit. |

Guinea pigs can't vomit. This is most likely diarrhea, which can be a serious problem. You need to get your guinea pig to the vet as soon as you can. |

What kind of bedding do you use? I once lined my cage with unwashed fleece and became really concerned with what really ended up being the urine beading on the fleece and not wicking. Could it possibly be urine? |

Wait, she is in a divided cage with your pig? What do you mean she is coming out of quarantine when you just got her? GPs cannot vomit. |

whatever it was it was coming out of her mouth, she has residue on her lips unless she got that from sniffing it which I didn't see, yes she was coming out of a 2 or 3 week quarantine when i got her and it's only been this one time, she hasn't had any problems all night or so far this morning she's been eating and running around happily ever since. |

She could have been sniffing at something. As others said she can't vomit. You should really take her to a vet if you think something is wrong. |

An internet forum isn't a substitute for veterinary care. When you decide to take in pets you also need to be able to provide them with medical care when they need it and they won't give you advanced warning. Hopefully this is an isolated incident and not what you thought it was (since guinea pigs can't vomit), but if this is diarrhea and happens again then she needs medical care now. Not in 2 days, a week, or longer. Any kind of abnormal fluid be it diarrhea, eye crust, nose goo, or anything else requires the attention of a qualified exotics vet. |

What you're describing isn't normal and the best thing for you to do would be to get her to a vet now. That in only happened once doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a serious problem - or the start of one, and by the same token, that she's seemingly acting normal also doesn't mean that she's fine. As I'm sure you know, pigs are prey animals, which means they are most likely going to hide their symptoms as best they can until they absolutely cannot anymore, at which point it's often too late to intervene. Please get her in to see a vet. Hopefully it's nothing serious and you can rest easy knowing she's healthy. If it's something that needs treatment, though, as it very well may, you'll have gotten her in early enough to remedy the problem. Good luck. |
