I adopted 2 male pigs from a work friend two days ago.when we got them both home i noticed that their fur was not in as nice a condition as my other two pigs , and on inspecting their fur i noticed flakey skin and scabs along their backs and i also noticed them scratchin and biting themselves , so i assumed that they both had mites and treat them both with some spot on treatment.this mornin i took them both to the vets to have them checked over, and the vet said that he could not see anything wrong with the skin other than noticeable sighs that they had been scratching and biting them selves. he said that the spot on treatment that i had used would of probably killed the mites and to repeat this after a week then again two weeks later.but when i got home with the pigs and put them back in their cage i noticed crumped was still biting his self on his back , so im not sure if the mites have cleared up or not. Also they seem very sad and unhappy and i am worried that they are stressed . cola and crumpet , as we have named them came from a home where they were kept in a cage outside , and i beleive guineapigs should be kept indoors. So do you think that it could just be the stress of being moved from their home outside, to being brought inside with all different sounds and smells that is making them stressed ? and also the fact that my other dominant male kicked up a bit of a fuss when he could smell the new pigs and that also could of frightened them.i have my two new pigs in a seperate room from my other two pigs , lucas and snowball. they just don`t seem happy at all . |

Congrats on the new "kids". They've had a lot happen in a short time. Don't forget that they are prey animals and skittish by nature. They are also probably very uncomfortable with the skin issue. Patience, space, soothing voice, lots of hiding places and good food should show results relatively soon. |

It sounds like a pretty bad case of mites, and it has certainly not cleared up in 2 days. After the first treatment, mites can actually flare up. You need to repeat treatment in 7-10 days and then again another 7-10 days after that. You might need additional doses as well. What did you treat them with? Good treatments for mites are Ivermectin and Revolution. Mites can cause a lot of pain, so try to avoid handling them too much, and wrap them in a towel when you do. Moving outdoors to indoors is a good thing. It can take weeks or months for a guinea pig to get comfortable in a new environment, so just be patient. I'm glad you were able to take them in. It sounds like they are in good hands. |

Thank you both for your posts Im also worried that I`v not heard either of them making much noise . They have made the occasionale Brrrrrrrrrrrring sound when something has frightened them. But other than that nothing , not even a wheeking sound.Do you think this could be because of the new surroundings , and that they are tring to be quiete so that my other two pigs don`t hear them ? |
