UNwelcomed post! : -21 (+2/-23)
Alrighty.. I have my two male guinea pigs out and they are running around my apartment, and I had just flipped a fish tank over because they like to run in it and poop in it. I went over to my pig and he was sitting next to a pile of milky white stuff that I know could only be semen.. (I know it wasnt pee it was pure milky white it wasnt calcium like they get in their pee or pee or anything else). A pretty disgusting find to say the least. Also two times (maybe more) I had them in a new area and they were gayin it up and uh.. mouth sexin and again i saw milky stuff. Some things you should be able to unsee.. i found it disturbing and weird but im wondering if that is just the way of two male guinea pigs or if perhaps I just ended up with an unfortunate pair. ![]() ![]() sorry if that is vulgar |

Guinea Pig semen has the consistency of super glue and tends to go see through as it hardens which happens very quickly! (please correct me if this is wrong but this is what I have found on other websites) |

I'm pretty sure that it was urine. Their urine can be milky white and as long as it doesn't crystalize, it's fine. Mounting is normal dominance behavior and to the best of my knowledge, guinea pigs don't "gay it up" |

Same sex mounting is also entirely normal. It's how the dominant pig asserts his dominance. It's not "Gay" or "disgusting" but a normal, natural part of how the species interacts socially. |

As has been said, same sex mounting and sexual behavior is normal and, as in any unaltered animal, emissions are normal as well. I do need to point out that the way you worded your post and approached questioning this issue is fairly offensive. We have many homosexual members who can take great offense to the way you worded your post. I don't really care what your personal views are on homosexuality and it doesn't matter anyway. No matter what your perspective is you are expected to conduct yourself in a respectful manner when referring to (or about) any and all races, creeds, ethnicities, and sexual preferences. We do not tolerate racism, classism or any other forms of bigotry or xenophobic behavior on this forum. |

There's nothing disgusting, disturbing, or weird about it - it's just normal behavior you'll see quite a bit more of as you get to know your two boys. |

the milky stuff is what they scent mark with. its them scenting their own territory. If they are mounting and white stuff comes out that is obviously a different story but a male guinea pig only mounts another male guinea pig to show dominance and that he is the boss. i'm sorry but you most likley do not have gay guinea pigs. |

I am gay and just want to say that it was not entirely offensive. But I am not easily offended. The fact that it is two males doing it is not disturbing. It is more the fact that I would hate to have to clean up semen from an animal. Again it sounds so normal though, most of the male pets i have kept do that. |

I understand what you're trying to ask. I have to say the way you worded your post was kind of silly though. As everyone else has said, with the mounting they're proving dominance. I see this even with my females from time to time. As for the, um, "mouth sexin" I'm not sure(i'm new to boars as well). Maybe they're just learning each others scent? |

I have girls and they mount each other in dominance and also when if the girls are in heat. But most of the time its about dominance. The baby in the herd does not realised she is a baby and always go around disturbing the big girls trying to show them she is the boss and that includes mounting. "Mouth sexin" LMAO... With that do you mean the other pig put its mouth to the other piggy's rump? As another poster mentioned, its either to smell their scent (the pigs have their scent gland located there) or is trying to coax the other pig to give him a healthy poo to munch on. This is not gross either. Sometimes another pig may lack healthy gut flora and they replenish it by eating another healthy pig's poo. |

Dominance behavior, and same-sex interactions that appear to be or actually are sexual, are found all over the animal world. Dominance behavior and same-sex sexual interaction are also widespread in the human world, but with an overlay of complex human cognition and complex social categorization just as found with heterosexual sexual interactions (and every other type of human behavior). Same-sex sex in humans is about as aberrant as left-handedness---less usual in the population, but very much out there if you notice it. Luckily most cultures have stopped persecuting lefties--left-handedness was a completely imaginary 'aberration'. Shows that cultural categories are mutable, although they are often taken to be set in stone and part of nature, called 'God's plan'. Hope the other imaginary 'aberrations' go away. |

That "milky white stuff" that you "KNOW" could only be semen, was likely urine. It's completely normal dominance behavior for male (or female for that matter) guinea pigs to mount each other. It doesn't mean they're gay, it means they're guinea pigs. I would suggest doing a bit (or more than a bit) of research on guinea pig behavior before insisting that they are an "unfortunate" pair. Your lack of knowledge on the topic could have been more carefully worded though. |

I have unapproved a couple of posts from this thread as they were completely unnecessary comments. Edit: I've also changed the title of this thread as I felt the old title was rather inappropriate. Last edited by Ly&Pigs; 10-26-09 at 11:26 pm. |

As to the 'milky white stuff' I was on the chat one night and it was called "boar glue"--I got the idea that rather than urine, it really is ejaculative fluid, with or without sperm in it. I haven't seen it yet with my boars but I'm kind of expecting it. With these tiny tiny animals the disgust factor is small, and for me, getting smaller by the day. Today I picked up a handful of hay got a bunched of soaked bedding, and it was no big deal. Whatever secretions they make, they are not like the ones of us big smelly carnivores. Although I do feel like I am cleaning out miniature stables several times a day, it doesn't seem disgusting. I think nothing piggies could do would be disgusting. (No offense to dog-lovers, but I am far from that feeling about dogs!) |

For reference, this is what "boar glue" looks like: (picture taken during floor time) ![]() It hardens very quickly into a dried super-glue consistency. ![]() In the picture, it is still in the pliable stage. |

Obviously the original poster doesn't know what boar semen looks like vs urine. While unpleasant to look at, I think a visual aid may be necessary in this instance. |
