Question My two males STILL mounting and rumbling...?

I had Bubba for about a year before I finaly got him a buddy, I was reluctent because he had been alone his whole life (he's a rescue). Anyways, when I first introduced them obviously there was ALOT of mounting, and some rumblestrutting from Bubba, the bigger and older one. Mocha seemed to accept Bubba as the dominant one.. for a while.. Now Mocha, the smaller younger one is mounting alot which upsets Bubba who will then start rumblestrutting a lot. They have been together about 2 months now... Is it normal that they are going to be mounting forever? And does scent marking ever stop or taper off because...well... it stinks!!

Thanks!!!

oh ps Bubba = almost 2
Mocha = about 1 year

Sounds like Mocha is still in puberty.
If he is really about a year it should temper off soon or at least that's what I keep being told.

Hopefully things will quiet down soon, but even if they don't, it's okay.

If you're using fleece, keeping a small piece of dirty fleece in the cage when you change the rest of it can prevent them from remarking everything.

How big is your cage?

Good advice akstrohm, I'll have to remember that when my babies I just got hit puberty, this is the kinda thing that worries me.

Hope things do calm down for you soon, I know it's stressful for us owners to watch these behaviors and feel helpless, something they actually have to work through themselves.

This happened to me, Lakota who was alone for a whole year before I got Meeka as a birthday present to him. It took a long time until meeka could accept Lakota as the dominant male. But now they both live in the same cage, and get along!

Re: My two males STILL mounting and rumbling...?

My two boys are almost 5 years old and have been together most of their lives, yet we still have episodes of mounting, rumblestrutting and chasing. However, once Slick realises that Charlie is not ready to give up the throne, it subsides. I also do not soap and water wash everything when I clean the cage. Mostly I use hot water and elbow grease to clean their plastic pigloos. It gets the uck and muck off but leave their "fragrances" intact, which cuts down on the marking.
