Talking So I've Gotten my pig!

I got "Teddy" about a week ago and things are going pretty well. He is currently living in a large store cage until I find all my C&C products, it's turning out to be a big pain, I might just have to purchase one off the site. I'll give it another week until I give up.

I really want to rename him because my god sons name is Teddy. He seems to come to "Piggy!" if guinea pigs come when you call, he probably figures I just have goodies for him. He is already turning into a little boss. If I don't get up and feed him on time he flips over his food bowl and starts wheeking as if he's never been fed a day in his life. And while I get his food and veggies ready he popcorns, which I have to say is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.

He's still pretty skittish when I try to reach to pet him and pick him up while he's on the ground or in the cage but he's getting a little more trusting. He is a big cuddle bug, he sits in bed with my boyfriend and snuggles right up next to him. Much to his dismay, my hubby man forgot that they aren't as talented with toilets as cats and dozed off with him.

I have found that as long as Gizzy can get to her kitchen/littertray then she never pees anywhere else. She also poops 99% of time in her pool so I sleep with her quite often. I will throw a mattress on the floor and play with her till we both fall asleep and seeing as though I sleep a max of 4 hours a time it works out great for us both so tell your hubby man not to give up on sleeping with the little cuddle bug!!!

Re: So I've Gotten my pig!

Welcome! I hope you get your cage set up ASAP. Are you going to get him a friend? Guinea pigs should not be kept alone as they are social animals and can get bored and depressed without another guinea pig. He sounds like a cute pig!

Re: So I've Gotten my pig!

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you, your hubby man, and your pig are all getting along well.

If you can't find the materials for a C&C, you could try making an alternative cage. I've heard of people using shower curtains, linoleum, shelving units, bureaus, all kinds of stuff. The only limit is your imagination! There's a pretty decent photo album on this site, maybe you could get some ideas from there?

I also hope you're considering getting him a friend, guinea pigs are social creatures and it does them good to have a buddy!

Re: So I've Gotten my pig!

I hope I can get the little guy litter trained, right now it just seems like all he's interested in is finding new and exciting places to poop lOl. I am planning on getting him a pal, maybe around x-mas. I just got my mother used to the idea of one guinea pig and I don't want to push my luck so soon. She was terrified of him at first, which I don't see how anyone can be scared of something so cute, but now she begs for me to get him out so she can have lap time with him.

Thanks for the ideas for a cage, it's been driving me nuts. I really don't like him in the cage he's in now because the most he really does in there is sit in his little pigloo. So I give him about 2 to 3 hours of floor time in the bathroom which he really enjoys. My boyfriend built him a really long tunnel out of soda boxes and hides bits of carrot all through it. I'll be posting pics sometime this week, I took a bunch when I first got him but their all blurry cuz he just wont stay put! XD

My cage is right next to my bed and my piggy being acrobatic found out how to climb into my bed! So 5 times a week (or so) I wake up with a furball in my bed usually next to my chest!

Re: So I've Gotten my pig!

That's so cute! I really want to get him litter trained so he can sleep with us. He really likes it, but as I said he also enjoys going potty every where. I heard your spouse to put the litter pan where ever he goes the most but that isnt exactly easy to do. Sure he sits in and eats the hay I put in there, but other than that he thinks its a giant food bowl lOl. But we figure if I lay a couple thick towels down in the bed during cuddle time it's easy to clean up.

Re: So I've Gotten my pig!

Pigs will only train themselves if they want to do so. And there's really no way for that to work in the store bought cage. Most store bought cages are the size the litter box should be.

He needs a larger cage and a friend ASAP. Living in a store bought cage alone would be like you living alone in a bathroom.
