So I recently got a new guinea pig to pair with my already existing one. Both are males (from what the store told me). They have been getting along great with no fighting or anything the past few days. THen today I went to do my first poop scoop clean up and my older guinea pig started chasing the little new guy around. It didn't look as if he was biting him, but rather getting on top of the little guy and making a humping motion. However, he would only do it for a couple seconds at most. But he would keep on following the little guy around and kept doing the same thing. I get scared because at times it looks like the little guy is suffocating and getting trapped but I know he is okay because he doesn't make a strong effort to escape. Is this just a sign of my older guy trying to show dominance over the little guy? Or is my older guy just in need of some lust (even though they are both males). It is just weird because they have been fine up until i cleaned their cage. Anything would help, thanks! |

Okay, first of all, make sure they are both males. Don't rely on what petstores told you. They are often wrong. Second, if they are both males, let them be. Unless they are fighting until bloodshed, it is normal dominance behavior. See this thread on Guinea Lynx. It has helpful info with pictures and videos. http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46468 Adding links to how to sex your pigs: http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing.html Sexing Guinea Pigs: How to Sex a Guinea Pig |

That is a normal dominance behavior. They probably only started it when you cleaned the cage, because you took away their scent, so it was essentially new territory to them. But if you bought him from a store, you should bring him to a vet, as petstore piggies are commonly sick, or mis-sexed. ETA: Sorry for repeating info, looks like lissie and I posted at the same time! |
