Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Hi, Really stuck on what to do, i bought to male baby guinea's (6 Weeks) same litter on friday night. Got everything they needed and done everything by the book. Sadly got home on mon and perky had died. Pinky had groomed him and new he was dead then backed away so i knew it was ok to remove him. The one that died had been very quiet and poo'd allot compared to the other, but i just thought it was nervous being in a new home. I checked the one that had died for any fighting marks none but he was exteremly messy on his bum (he was fine in the morning). Thoughly cleaned and changed all bedding/water/food/chew sticks in case of infection. Now worried about Pinky and pet shop have none left of that litter and said to intro another one from a different litter that they will fight. They surgested a rabbit i said it would have to a dwarf one thou. What would you surgested risk intro of a new pig or rabbit. Been told my guinea would die on it's own and panickin as i dont want to loose Pinky too! Also they said a rabbit would be ok on pigs food not sure about this either! Any surgestions would be appreciated! Thanks x |

The biggest advice I can give you is to NOT listen to a word of advice the petshop gives you. So far they are 100% WRONG. So far this is a list of what the petstore has done wrong; -They sold you sick animals. -The didn't tell you to get your remaining pig to a vet (which they should pay for) -Guinea pigs from different litters can absolutely be introduced and will bond. -Rabbits and GPs should NEVER be housed together rabbits http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...inea-pigs.html -A GP will not die on it's own. It's simply happier with friends. The first thing you need to do is to get your remaining GP to a vet for a full physical. It likely has the same illness your other one had and you may soon have 2 dead GPs. You need to bring the vet bill to the petstore and make them pay. Make a stink about it if they refuse. Go to the press, BBB, or wherever else you need to to make them fulfill their responsibility. I guarantee you are not the only one this has happened to. You need to help stop the cruel treatment of animals by petstores. Once your GP is well we can help you find a rescue/shelter in your area to adopt a friend for your GP. Please don't buy any more animals. It's a cruel industry. There are loads of small animals in shelters needing homes and they have usually been checked out by a vet and are healthy. Sorry about your loss. |

Thanks for replying, i'm in the uk and called RSPCA they just have female pigs in my area. I tell ya it's no wonder people have trouble looking after pets correctly as the petshop advice you get is so conflicting to the other petshop! I did call a vet to ask for advice over the phone as the one thats ok didn't have any symptoms as the other and he is doing ok. hes feeding pellets/veg/fruit also drinking plenty and playfull and talktive and poo'ing and weeing ok. I do want to get a mate for him as i work all day and he needs a buddy! |

This site has lots of guinea pigs needing a new home and a list of rescues in each area. Guinea Pig Rehome - Adopt a unwanted Guineapig (cavy) from a rescue centre. |

Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Hi, Thanks for replying, right re contacted pet store told them i did not want a rabbit and would like a refund. They offered me to take back pinky and they will give me a full refund for both. Have been a little concerned about a bold spot on his head so did a little research and discovered it could be ringworm! so sadly i have decided it's best to return him back than risk infecting another animal later on. Gutted about this but it's better than risk infection killing another or two! After discussing this with a collegue at work she knows someone who wants to re-home there two gp's so i'm going to have a look at them tonight. |

You should be taking him(?) to a cavy savvy vet, not just dumping him. |

I'm not dumping him at all! That would be abandoning him in a box and leaving. I'm returning him to were i bought him as i think it could be something wrong with him and would risk infection or death to other pigs that i may be getting! I've only had him a few days. |

No, you are dumping him back into the pet store where he got sick in the first place instead of taking him to a vet and CURING him. If you take him to the vet, he will go on antibiotics for whatever he has and he will be better (if you get him there in time.) All you would need to do is clean the cage and all the accessories really well, which you would need to do regardless. Future pigs will not be affected as long as he is taken care of. It is irresponsible to get rid of him because he is not 100% healthy. Then again, you got what you paid for. As you know, most guinea pigs from pet stores are sick. Why not just take him to the vet? |

Take him to the vet and make the pet store pay the bills. Don't just return him. He probably has mites, lice, or ringworm, so he needs to be treated for those as well. Once he is better, then find him a friend. If he's treated properly, the new pigs will be fine. |

Quote:
This is a good illustration of why you shouldn't get pet store pigs in the first place, BUT, as far as I'm concerned, you are now morally obligated to take care of this pig. The pet store is doing THE WRONG THING by just offering to take the pig back. They're not going to treat it, they're either going to sell it to some other unsuspecting person, or feed it to a snake. Do what Voodoo said. Tell the pet store you're taking the pig to the vet, and they ARE going to be covering the costs, or you ARE going to make as big and as public a stink about how they sell sick animals as you possibly can. |

That is why you quarantine him from the new guinea pigs while he is getting treatment. |

I'm really sorry for your loss. I hope you do not return the sick pig to the store. And if you decide to do that. I don't think you should get any more pigs (or any pets for that matter). If you're not willing to take a sick pig to a vet, what are you going to do if the new pigs get sick? Dump them? Coz you can't possibly return them to the person who wanted to rehome them. |

How sad. Unfortunately this is common with pet stores. |
