Congratulations on the pregnancy. If you don't mind why would rehome instead of maybe downsizing cage wise or moving to cage somewhere else do that their would be plenty of room or is their some other reasons for rehomeing as well? Last edited by Rnd210; 08-15-09 at 10:57 pm. Reason: add |

How little is your house that you feel you need to give up pets? My home is really small but somehow I have managed to not only keep all of my pets, even when I found out I was pregnant with my second child, but we also added several animals to our family AND I manage to run a small rescue and foster animals in my home. I guess I just don't understand the concept of giving up sentient creatures because a baby is on the way. I would rather get rid of the dining room table, the sofa or the big screen T.V. and entertainment system (all of which tend to take up way more room then a GP cage). |

I don't understand why people are questioning the OP? She has stated that she feels bad as it is and also that it was a difficult decision. Everyone has thier limitaions and what they can and cannot take on and handle. I applaude her for coming here to people that do care and have the knowledge about GP's to re home them. To the OP...congrats and hope your pregnancey goes smoothly...I know this was a hard decision for you and I wish i lived closer but the West coast is a bit of a commute. |

I Googled this but this is what my doctor pretty much said...Rodents may carry lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). If a pregnant woman is infected with LCMV, it can pass to the unborn baby and cause severe abnormalities or loss of the pregnancy. Avoid all contact with rodents, including pet hamsters and guinea pigs, and with their urine, droppings and nesting materials throughout pregnancy. |

I think if you use caution and proper hand washing techniques I don't see a problem with it. I have worked with people who work up until their third trimester on an ambulance and I think dealing with humans carries more risk, disease and people becoming combative. Could someone else help with the piggies? Did you tell your doctor you wouldn't get rid of them. Sometimes doctors always suggest getting rid of animals for their own liability because if you were to become sick and he didn't tell you, you could potentially sue him for not warning you. Anyways, Good Luck in your decision and I hope it works out. |

I have 4 kids. I've always had pets in the house and take full care of them myself. We have hamsters, guinea pigs, cats and dogs. We used to have rats also. We are in a really small cape for 6 people. I think if you are careful that pregnancy is not an excuse to rehome. Good Luck though |

First off, congratulations on your pregnancy!! I'm sure you'll find a perfect forever home for those pigs. Whether or not rehoming is the best option, I think you should do whatever you need to do for the baby (and for you!). Have you thought of any names for the baby yet? |

Because when you take in an animal, it should be for the duration of their lives, not until it becomes inconvenient for you to have them anymore. If you want to, you'll find a way to work it out. All too often, people use all kinds of excuses to rehome their animals and it's discouraging to those of us who take our commitment to our animals seriously and would never consider sending them off to a new home when something "more important" came up. |

I was looking at your gallerry and maybe you could make your cage a bit smaller. I also saw that you had a rabbit. Just out of curiosity are you keeping or re-homing your rabbit too? |

Maybe the room thats being used for the piggies and rabbit would be needed for new baby.As Shawods19 said, her home is small.I think down sizing would be unkind and if a new home is found with a large space then its best for the pets. |

What gets me is that she said nothing about rehoming the rabbit and the pigs look like they are in the same room as the rabbit. |

She might not have said anything about the rabbit because this is a GP forum. And what gets ME is that the first thing to go in so many cases when a baby comes along is the pets, as though they're just the throw-away starter project to keep you busy until something more interesting comes along. I know that if it were me, my first reaction would be to find a way to make it work with the animals I already had rather than immediately trying to find a reason to get rid of them and focus on the baby. |

I too thought that we were not supposed to question people looking to rehome? It says on the rehoming page that we are NOT supposed to give advice on how they can keep them unless it is specifically asked for. Like it says on there, the reasons someone might give publicly may not always be the real reason. Not saying that is the case in this situation, but whatever their reason is, that is their decision. I've personally got rid of furniture to expand my cage, but sometimes that is not feasible for everyone. |

Yes, it does say that in the adoptables section, but she did not post this there she posted in general guinea pigs so may not have fully thought it through and may actually want others opinions on the subject. |

This isn't the Adoptables section, and even if it were, I think what's being voiced here is an opposition to an approach to pet ownership that's so nonchalant. |
