Say someone is upset and frustrated because they feel their Guinea Pig isn't bonding with them? What would be the best advice to give someone about bonding with their guinea pig? Thanks! |

Guinea pigs don't really bond with people. They don't have the same emotional capabilities we do. Plus, they see us as large potential predators and only come to trust us in time. This is why they need the company of another guinea pig and should not be kept alone. That said, they do appreciate good care. Just provide them with a large enough space, a proper diet, and vet care, and don't worry about them bonding with you. |

I think the best thing is just to spend time around them and take good care of them. I started by sitting near them during floor time, talking to them and poking my head in every time I walk by the cage, hand feeding them the parts of hay they like the best. I don't think they're devoted to me like a cat or a dog would be, but they do popcorn if I go into the floor time enclosure, and follow me around when I walk from one end to the other. Maybe they are just hoping for food, but it does show that they know that I am a provider for them. |

My advice to that person would be to be patient. Give the guinea pig time to warm up to them. Try giving the GP some space to come out and explore without some large creature (the human) looming overhead. They need to feel like it's safe to come out of hiding. Once in a while, try hand feeding the guinea pig so they start to associate the person with good and positive things. |

Hold them on a regular basis. Take care of them, and give it time. Good luck! |

Groom your guinea pigs, most guinea pigs like having gentle stroking with a brush or comb. Also, stroke your guinea pigs behind the ears, this is a sensitive spot and they like it. Get a hoodie with big pockets and let them climb in my guinea pigs love this game! |
