Going on vacation...

Going on vacation: I am leaving for several days and I am wondering if it is healthier for my piggie to stay in her 6foot by 3 foot environment and have a friend check on her every other day or take her to their house in her really small pet store cage???

Re: Going on vacation...

With a C&C cage its hard because you can move it. I suggest that you bring her in her hospial cage? If you dont have one you should get one.

Re: Going on vacation...

I'm leaving for a 4 day trip today. I have a friend that lives nearby that will stop in eveyday and take care of my guinea pigs and bunnies. My neighbor takes care of my dogs. I split it up so I don't overwelm 1 person with my animals. We decided it was easier for her to come here than to drag cages to her house. Even my petstore cages are just about the size of a 2x3 (the largest Marchioro cage), they are kinda hard to transport everywhere.

Re: Going on vacation...

would it be possible for your friend to check on her once daily? If not then perhaps it would be better to put her in the small cage where at least she can be fed and given fresh water on a daily basis. I mean it's not like she's going to be in the small cage for the rest of her life.

Re: Going on vacation...

If it's not anymore than a week it would be fine to use a petstore cage; Most guinea pigs live in cages like that most of their lives. I would definately not reccomend having a friend check on the pig every other day. If you were leaving her at home in her C&C cage a friend would most likely have to check on her 3 times a day everyday. My family hired a very-trusted, responsible high school girl who we have known for years to stay at our house full-time for our vacation week. Of course that's just us because we also have dogs, cats, chickens, horses...

Re: Going on vacation...

I'd be in favor for the petstore cage if your sitter cannot come over every day. Pigs need veggies every day and a lot can happen overnight. If your sitter has room: I've done a temp cube cage with a shower curtain as a lining. It's easier to move and set up than the coroplast.

Re: Going on vacation...

I've done the same thing with my pigs as PiggieMom, the only thing different is that I used a tarp instead of a shower curtain. They are easily portable and still gives them lots of room. It may not be as big as her cage, but bigger then a petstore cage and it would be easy for your friend to clean. You just need to use fleece and towels.
