Sorry, this is a bit of a weird question.

I've had my guineas about a week now, they're settling in really well. But every now and then I hear a kind of spray sound. I know this might sound silly, but is that the sound they make when they urinate? They still won't drink from their bottle but if I know they're urinating they must be getting enough water.

Thanks!

Re: Sorry, this is a bit of a weird question.

Do you have females? Sometimes a female will "spray" another pig. One of mine did it when we introduced our third pig to the group, but she hasn't done it since. That's not to say that others don't do it more often as a show of dominance or annoyance.

Or what kind of bedding do you use? I guess if you're using shavings or something and don't have it very deep you could be hearing their pee on the bottom of the cage.

I dont know that you can hear them urinate though. Atleast, I've been witness to and first hand experience in being urinated on and I can't say that I heard it.

If you are using traditional bedding though, like carefresh or aspen, it could be them sneezing. Because a guinea pig sneeze sounds, atleast to me, very much like a cat or dog sneezing. Which does sort of sound like a spray bottle. Albeit much quicker. We use to use carefresh with our piggers until we found this site and learned of the wonders of fleece, and my heidi sneezed bad with the carefresh, especially when it was cleaning day.

Good call! That never even crossed my mind. I can't say that I've ever heard my girls spray each other, but I was thinking if it hit the side of the cage you might hear it. But the sneezing theory does make more sense.

My pigs sneeze once in a while and it was a strange sound, but they use to "cough" when I used carefresh, and that was an even stranger sound.

Oh now, I agree totally with this. I couldn't begin to describe it. But I hear it often (My Heidi is a bit over zealous at the water bottle)
