Just leaving the house, when my daughter noticed something moving in the bushes next to the door. Calico cavi was trying to climb into the plastic drainpipe extension I had on the ground! Don't know where this cavi came from, or how long it has been out on its own. It's large, dirty and skinny---but we couldn't leave him by himself to fend alone for more days and nights (?), especially because of the horned owls in the neighborhood. I figure that's why he was hiding in the drain pipe. I must admit he is very docile and cool and both kids have taken to him right away. Went out and bought a starter cage, but I am glad I found this site to be able to build him a proper cage. We gave him some water, and food, and with some nice bedding is purring away. He watches and follows both kids intently. I don't know how he got here, but looks like we have an addition to the family....! |

What an amazing story! That sounds like one lucky pig. How are things going? What have you decided to name him? I hope you post pictures. I'd love to see this very special pig. |

Aww what a sweet story! Before you get to attached, ask around the neighbour hood incase he is a much loved pet that has escaped during exercise time though. Imagine your kids showiing him to their friends, who run straigh home and tell their mum! Could start an argument and better be safe then sorry! More likely though, he's been dumped or something. Who knows! Lucky he made it into your garden, and not into someone's less caring ..or with dogs! |

If the pig was skinny and dirty, he was most likely dumped and wandering for a bit. Poor baby. Bless you for taking him in. |

Bless you for rescuing him! I'm happy that he's starting to get some proper care. You may want to find a cavy savvy vet to take him to get him checked over. If he's been living on his own and fending for himself or neglected for awhile, then he could be sick. Is this your first guinea pig? Please post pictures! |

''If the pig was skinny and dirty, he was most likely dumped and wandering for a bit.'' He could have just escaped and has to fend for himself. If he is tame and docile, he was obviously well-handled. I'm only pointing this out because I have had pets run away before, and I know how heart-breaking it is not to know where they are, how they are being treated and even if they are alive. |
