Beware of Cilantro

Just sending out a warning I got from my vet. Don't feed your pigs too much cilantro, parsley, or other veggies similar to those. Apparently they are incredibly high in calcium. And they can lead to the solidification of livers, which can be deadly. If your pigs must have some, limit them to about a piece a week.

Re: Beware of Cilantro

Thanks for the tip, alilporkbun! I don't give my guinea pigs cilantro or parsley.

My guinea pigs on average get:

-Carrots
-Strawberries
-Canteloupe
-Romaine Lettuce
-Cabbage
-Oranges
-Spinach(sometimes)
-Kiwi Fruit (a BIG favorite!)
-Grapefruit

I also give them plenty of Timothy hay

My guinea pigs are rather "selective," meaning that some foods are liked by a few, but hated by the rest of the piggies. So I have to offer a big selection of foods to them. The next time you go grocery stopping, take a list of foods commonly liked by guinea pigs, and buy a few of them. You will be amazed at what your guinea pigs LOVE to eat!

Cilantro and Parsley

...great, I thought I was doing my guineas a big favor finding organic parsley and cilantro. I had read that parsley is high in Vit. C.

This seems to be an ongoing topic... for example, I've read that too much spinach is bad. And as far as romaine lettuce is concerned, only the really green bits of the leaves are recommended.

Re: Cilantro and Parsley

No head lettuce and ALL things in moderation. Variety is the key.
