Unhappy Biting

My guinea pig has been biting. I cant think a reason why she would be biting. I took her to the vet on the 5th and she has bitten me 5 times since. She bit me twice on my arms(she drew blood), then she bit me 3 times on my ears. I dont get it. She doesnt act like she is mad when she bites me. The dogs arnt barking or carrying on when she does it. Her cage is kept clean and she has plenty to eat. Can anyone help? It's getting to the point where Im afraid to hold her.

Re: Biting

There are many things that can cause biting. One of the most common things is mites.

Please see www.cavyspirit.com/biting.htm for more info on biting.

Re: Biting

ProudPiggyOwner:I bought her from a pet store. I really hope they weren't mean to her. Im going to put some chew toys in her cage tomorrow and she how she does with them. Thank you.

MissGinger:Yes, I believe he is. He seemed pretty cavysavvy when I brought Pinky to him. He gave her a shot for mites because we found one on her when we were there. And he asked all of the usual questions and made sure I was giving her fresh veggies and not buying pellets from walmart.

Ly&Pigs: Thank you Im reading the site now. =)

Re: Biting

Well, after reading the site. It makes alot of sense why she is biting. Her cage is a bit on the small side. It has 2 platforms with ramps. Me and my boyfriend have been saving for a C&C cage so we can use the smaller one to quaratine a new buddy for her. Thank you very much for your information.

Biting Guinea Pigs

If a guinea pig is being held or carried a certain way, they may not feel safe or secure, so they may try to nip the person they are being held by to let them know of their discontent. It is very often just a nip, but if there are other things that may be causing stress, it may be a little harder than that. To make a guinea pig feel secure when you are holding him or her, hold them close to your body and use a towel or something else to wrap them in, and try not to let them know they are in the air.

Re: Biting

Pinkysmom, one shot of anything is not going to be effective for mites. It sounds like he gave her ivermectin? Ivermectin has to be repeated weekly for at least 3 weeks, otherwise the eggs on the guinea pig simply hatch and the pig is infested.
