What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

This seems to be a dilimmea here lately. I am all set planning on getting a piggy from a rescue, and then I browse craigslist and see this ad...

"I have a wonderful guinea pig for adoption. His name is Larry and he is about 1yr. old. We have had him since he was a baby, he is sweet, does not bite and lets you hold him although he scurrys around his cage when you are trying to pick him up. We don't have the time to play with him like we should. He comes with his cage, ball to run around in, toys, food, hay, house, shampoo and bedding. There is a $40.00 rehoming fee. If you are interested in him please call ..."

And then I see his pictures....he looks similar to Lucy only black and white. And his name is Larry. That is too cute, considering Lucy...Larry and Lucy...:

And then you see his cage and bedding he is on:

Tiny cage, Cedar bedding....good grief. At least he has hay, toys, and is eating guinea pig food unlike how Lucy was when I got her.

He'd need to be neutered since Lucy is a female, but....

What do you think? Worth looking into, or no?

Well if you don't take him maybe you can at least educate the owners, tell them to throw the ball away for one!
Do you already have a rescue pig in mind?

I would definitely look into it. He needs a good home, out of that cage, and off that bedding. And to for sure never be placed in a ball again!

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

if your looking for a second piggie and your able to get him neutered then go for it he defiantly needs a new home and a loving parent. And yes tell them to at least get rid of the ball.

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

I vote adopt Larry, so you can get him out of that small cage and be able to throw away the exercise ball. I've adopted from a shelter, a rescue, and from individuals and either way you will be giving a piggy a wonderful home and an opportunity at a much better life! No matter which place you adopt from you will be saving a pig's life.

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

I'm going to inquire about him today.

About getting him nuetered. Would an exotic animal clinic be able to do it? I know the rescue I was going to go through neuters males, so do you think they could do it for me (if I paid, of course)? I suppose the only way to know for sure is to call and ask...

If I can't get him nuetered at the very least I'll try to educate the owner...and at the most I'll take him in myself and foster him until he can find a good home.

The pig I'm interested in has an adoption pending. I haven't heard back from the rescue about what has happened there, but I am trying to set up a time that I can go and see all the pigs. I haven't heard back yet. I'm heading out of town Sunday and Monday and I'm going to reinquire when I get back.

Let us know if you are able to adopt Larry, I can't wait to find out if you get him. He looks like a very special little pig. We would love to see pigtures of which ever pig you adopt, even though we're all rooting for Larry*smile*.

hmmmm, then maybe Larry is the one for you! He definitly needs proper care, he may need vitamin c supplements as well because who knows if he's been given enough in his diet.

He will need a proper diet. Not just C supplements. If he has a proper diet with the veggies he needs, he won't need a C supplement.

I should have been more clear....I supplement my new rescue pigs with vitamin C (along with high quality pellets, KM's hay and veggies) during the quarantine period. It's something I learned from someone very reliable over at GL and the extra C doesn't hurt them, their body just gets rid of what they don't need. After quarantine I don't usually supplement with C at all and give them the right mix of veggies for their daily C requirements. I have found that new rescue pigs who have not had the right veggies in the past, are slow to eat everything I give them. Usually it takes a while before they will eat all of their salads, supplementing the new pigs with C gives me the peace of mind that they are meeting the daily C reqirements.
I also treat for mites (weather they look as if they need it or not) give baths and weigh every 4 days during quarantine. After quarantine I weigh weekly but when I have a new pig I like to keep a very close watch on their weight and have done daily weighings as well if I am concerned about their weight.
It's really something special to watch a new rescue change right before your eyes under proper care. At the beginning they usually have no idea what you are doing when you deliver the daily salads, but by the end of 3 or 4 weeks they are wheeking in demand for their salads!

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

I say go for Larry, he really needs it. He needs someone who is guarenteed to give him a good life. He may end up going to someone who will continue to house him the same way.. . Even if you do inform them, who knows how they will actually take it. You never do know, and if you have the ability to take this guy in, specially with the proper care you know he will get, he deserves this chance.

Afterall, the other piggie is adoption pending..meaning they probably have a home to go to even if don't get them. Who knows what will happen to this adorable little dude?

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

Larry is still up for grabs. I've talked with his owner and they are willing to meet me halfway to save on travel time/gas. I just need to give them the okay and the time to meet (and the money) and he's mine.

The rescue piggy that I was really really interested in wasn't adopted (this girl: Adopt a Guinea Pig: Crazy Haired Girl: Petfinder ) so now I just don't know.

I emailed the lady who "runs" the guinea pig portion of the rescue to see if there is anyway we can work something out so Larry is taken out of that situation and Crazy Haired Girl comes home with me. But we'll see. If she can't work anything out, I'm going to go with Larry, as much as I'd really like this crazy girl.

I should have everything sorted out in a day or two, but I hope everything works out okay.

It is wonderful, isn't it? When I first got Lucy she had no spirit...but once she started getting the care she needed she just came right out of her shell and developed such a personality! She will scold me now when she doesn't get her salad on time. And I've now found out that she LOVES apples. I'll put a slice on her salad and that is the first thing she eats. She'll grab it and carry it off into her house so she knows nobody else will get it.
Funny thing with her though was the first time I gave her a salad she ate it right up. LOL But then, she'll eat anything...including plastic wrappers.

Re: What about him? (Craigslist piggy)

Well, okay, I have everything sorted out sooner than I thought!

I will most likely be picking up Larry this weekend. Once I get him, he will be going to the guinea pig rescue. She will take him in and get him all fixed up and then adopt him out when the time is right. That will get him out of the situation he is in and into some caring, knowledgable hands without me having to worry about his future and getting him neutered.

Crazy Haired Girl will most likely be coming home with me and she will be my new piggy!

I guess that's killing to birds with one stone, huh? Now I just have to get all of the kinks worked out and get the cage ready and we'll be ready to go. I'm excited!

Sounds like Larry will get a better home and you get the girl you want.
