Question hair matting

I just noticed tonight while I was cleaning the cage that silly goofy piggy has matted hair around his bottom. His hair is mega long and I don't know how it got that way, because it's covered with soft silky hair on top, so stinker got a bath tonight, and I thought that maybe that would help, but nope. Should I cut it out?

I don't have any long coated pigs but I know you should be brushing it daily. You should cut it but in the future make sure you brush.

Re: hair matting

I have a long hair piggy who is the tangle queen. SO Here is what you can do, You can either wrap the hair if you want to keep it long, you need to brush it daily. But if you wrap it you need to do the wrapping thing daily. I can explian more if you interested. If you gave the pig a bath and couldnt untanlge the matts with your fingers then you should cut them out....

I actually had to give Nick a HUGE-O trim last week. But once her hair grows out some more im going to start to shave around the genatel area. To keep it clean and tangle free. That way she will still have long hair in the back.
Any other questions? I know tons about long hair and what you can do. I hope that helps!

Re: hair matting

The best thing to do is to give a bum trim and keep the bum hair trimmed so that it won't tangle and mat up. If you don't cut the mat's out, it will keep getting worse until it's up next to the skin and cause major pain to your pig.

Re: hair matting

If I were you I would cut the mats out.
I have 2 peruvian boars that we just rescued on Saturday. They were so badly matted on their bums that the mats had to be cut out. One of them still has a mat that I am working on. It's right up against his skin and is hard as a rock, I can't get scissors through it! The mat has actually pulled his skin and looks like it has caused him discomfort. I'm working the mat every day with a tiny bit of baby oil and it is helping to loosen up the hard crusty gunk. Poor little guy.
