female pair next door to a male?

Hello everybody! I have been thinking of adopting my female guinea pig(Ruffles) a friend. Ruffles is in a 3x3 cage and next door to my male(Buddy) who is in a 2x3. Could you see having Buddy next door causing any trouble in the introduction of another female? Thanks!

Re: female pair next door to a male?

Many people have males living next to females. Is there a lid on the cage? It's recommended to have either a lid on the males cage or a higher wall between male and females sharing a cage wall as male piggy's have been known to climb walls to get to a female. Just a precaution.

Re: female pair next door to a male?

I don't think it will be an issue since the male is alone, as long as he can't get over there to the girls. Is there any reason he can't also have a same-sex companion?

Re: female pair next door to a male?

I'd love for him to have a pal too, but I'm sure even asking my mom for one more pig would be pushing it. Buddy is only 1 and I'm sure that at some point in his life I will be able to get him a friend too. But unfortunately I don't think I can right now. Buddy and Ruff are perfectly alright how they are right now. I just want Ruffles to be as happy as possible in her golden years.

Why not neuter your male?

My mom would not give me permission or the money. Also, I don't know if I would be willing to put him through that kind of thing.

Will your mom give you money if any of these pigs get sick?

Re: female pair next door to a male?

oh yes. We've had guinea pigs for 11 years and she's always gotten them vet care when they need it. It's just that she would see a neuter as something unnecessary, expensive, and dangerous.

Wouldn't 2 males fight with females in such close proximity? I don't honestly know, so thought I'd ask...

I thought that too. But many people on here have this as the case and say it depends on the pigs personalities.

Re: female pair next door to a male?

The Humane Society called us and she was adopted yesterday. They have no other female pigs. Neither do any other shelters in our area. I'll just have to wait until another female comes or look in some farther away shelters. shucks.

Re: female pair next door to a male?

My male went bonkers and started rumble strutting and doing silly stuff when I put a female next to him. What I learned was to stop the silly acting. I placed a piece of coroplast in the middle . This way they can only smell each other, but I feel that out of sight out of mind works best. I hope this idea may help another person. I also must say that this time the piggy boy and girl are totally fine now and do
