How can you tell a pigs age?

Is there any trick on how to tell a pigs age? Like with horses its the shape of the teeth, with dogs and cats you can tell by how much plack is built up and where on the teeth. Is it by their weight? Is that it?

Re: How can you tell a pigs age?

My understanding is that there's not really any one sure way to tell. They do seem to gain as they get older, but I don't think that's really a reliable way to determine their age. If you have a good guinea pig vet, I suggest taking the pig into him/her to get a guestimate.

Re: How can you tell a pigs age?

I remember reading somewhere on here..someone said that since their piggies ears were "dropped", ment that they have matured, and are offically an adult now. I don't know if there is a way to tell a difference from a year old to a 6 year old though.

I believe sometimes you can tell by their nails. But I think once their a certain age, that no longer applies either. Not completely sure though.

I've heard this several times on GL. Though it's not really that accurate, the theory is younger pigs have thinner, more delicate nails, while older pigs nails get harder and thicker.
