New Piggy

We got a call Friday afternoon about one needing placement (allergies), and since I prefer a trio, we agreed. Of course, she's in quarantine right now, but she should be fine. She was their only one and spoiled. She was seen by their vet at the beginning of the year and was given a clean bill of health. I figured that I'll still keep her in quarantine just to be safe. If she doesn't blend well with our two girls, we'll have her available. I'm hoping she'll blend right in with them when the time comes to introduce her, though.

Here is Caridwen aka Cari (prounounced car-ee).

I did want your opinion, though, if you don't mind. Since she was an only pig, and was seen by a vet at the beginning of the year, how long of a quarantine would you do? She has clear eyes, clean nose, ears, etc. She's about a year old now. Right now, she's in a quarantine cage (store bought) that is about 40"L X 15"D (that's the inside measurements).

(Overlook where it was sitting, I took the picture when we first brought her in the house, after my husband got home from picking her up. The things sitting around the cage came with her from her previous owner. There is the travel cage, a large bag of Carefresh, another playpen that connects to mine perfectly, etc.)

Thanks!

Re: New Piggy

I would do a full two weeks to watch for mites and/or get it treated.

She's gorgeous and I'm so glad you have her now.

Re: New Piggy

That's what I was leaning towards, but I didn't know if it was necessary with everything that I told you. I, also, thought about just going ahead and trying to get her in to my vet this week. If they give her a clean bill, then would I still need to wait the two weeks? If so, then is there really any point in stressing her with that when she's already been seen by a vet this year? I guess I was always lucky when I did rescue before. Guinea Pigs don't come available that often around here, so I never had to worry about it. The timing was always right.

Re: New Piggy

Hm. When I adopted my first two from a rescue, they were healthy and fine. I did not take them to the vet as soon as I brought them home, but I did about 10-14 days of having them because they were itching too much and one had hair loss on his nose from mites.

So, I would say it's up to you. Pretty likely that Cari will get mites from just being in a new environment, and if you put her with your other two, they'll need treatment as well. If you don't mind treating all three, you could take Cari to the vet, get her checked out, get Ivermectin from the vet or independently, and (if vet says she's healthy) introduce them.

If you don't want to treat them all, you should leave her in quarantine.

Re: New Piggy

I would still wait the two weeks at least. You could always just go ahead and treat for mites as a precaution, but URI's and such have an incubation period. I think it would still be important to wait the full two weeks. Even if she is seen by a vet now, the symptoms of a URI still could not be present enough for the vet to find them.

She is very gorgeous though. Looks like she will fit right in with the other two

Re: New Piggy

She is so sweet. I love the little black bum. I would at least quarantine 2 weeks, or the 3 weeks usually preferred if you can. That way just in case of mites or illness you won't have 3 to treat. It was so hard to quarantine our last boy Brewster, but when we did the intros he seemed so happy to have brothers to play with, that it seemed worth the wait.
