Males aware of female presence?

Two of my boars are housed together. One boar is alone right now, but once we get back from vacation, he's going to get a spayed girlfriend. They will all be in my room. The cages WILL be right up next to each other, but they will be SEPARATE cages, and will NOT be attached.

Will my two boars that get along start to fight knowing the female is there?

Re: Males aware of female presence?

They might bicker and squabble more than they do right now, but they probably will not all-out brawl like you're afraid of.

Since she's spayed, they may not pay her much attention at all.

Re: Males aware of female presence?

I had the same concern when I only had 6 boys and I wanted to get girls. Everybody said it depends on the pigs, and it really does. So after quarantine, I put the three new girls in their cage in the "pig room" and waited for an all out blood fight to break out. But, nothing. In fact, four of the boys absolutely didn't care about the girls at all and still don't - it was only the two "problem children" that seem to pay them much mind at all, and then, only when the girls are in heat.

Now, many moons later, I have 8 boys living peacefully in the same room with 9 (not spayed) girls. (The boys are not with the girls, of course). And it's still only the two troublemakers that ever have an issue when the girls are in heat, and compared to what it could be, their squabbling is pretty minor - more annoying to me than anything.

Good luck with your new girl.

Re: Males aware of female presence?

I think it should help if the female is spayed, so she won't come into heat and be an extra 'temptation'.

Re: Males aware of female presence?

I have two pairs of boars which live in the same room as my four unneutered sows. I've never had a problem with fighting or bickering. The boys get on amazingly. I think you'll be fine.
