Detangler for pigs? Nick gets really tangly hair. I brush it daily but by the next day shes has tangles. Right now its cut but Im working on getting it long again. But can I use a detangler on her? Are there safe all natural kinds? Other then that I will have to wrap or bag her hair to keep it from tangling. Any idea? Other then cutting because even if it is sort enough for it to be near the ground it gets tangles, and it is clean its not pee or poopy so thats not the reason. Thanks for the help!

Re: Detangler for pigs? I don't know anything about detanglers. My silkie has hair that I barely ever brush and it just stays nice because it's so soft and straight. I'm curious what kind of pig you have?

Re: Detangler for pigs? I was reading up on Texel grooming the other day, and it said to use detangler products but not which kind. So I'm looking for one that will work also, I will let you know if I find one.

Re: Detangler for pigs? Yeah, but the Peruvian has a rosette on its head that causes the hair to come forward over the face. Shelties hair goes strait back

Re: Detangler for pigs? Beautiful pig! Pigs with long hair need regular grooming. You brush or comb YOUR hair several times a day, so long-haired pigs need the same attention. I strongly urge that you keep the hair trimmed around the rump and the pig's genitals...just for reasons of cleanliness. Pee in the hair can become a horrible, tangled (STINKY) mess very quickly. Do not use any kind of detangler product on a guinea pig. There may be toxic substances in it that the pig can ingest while trying to groom. I always like to point out to people that long haired pigs did not ask to have long hair. PEOPLE bred them for their long hair. A guinea pig can't take care of it's own long hair. Given the choice, they would probably choose an easy-to-care-for SHORT hairdo. Consider, also, using fleece and towels as bedding for long-haired pigs. Loose bedding can cause lots of problems with matting and tangles in a long haired pig.

Re: Detangler for pigs? Hmmm. Perhaps I didn't read as carefully as I should have. I have a long haired peruvian girl. I usually keep her hair trimmed pretty short because she hates being groomed. I guess the first thing I would suggest is to use a comb instead of a brush. A brush may not be getting through all the layers of the fur and separating them properly during grooming (although you can brush also if piggy enjoys it). The other thought is that it may be that you are bathing too often. Once a week seems excessive. What type of shampoo? My girl gets regular "butt baths" to keep clean, but only a full bath maybe two or three times a year. Too much bathing may be stripping the coat of it's natural oils and that may be contributing to it being more tangled. One more thought...do all of the hidey houses have a large enough opening so that your pig can go in and out without catching her hair along the edge? An opening that is too small (or too rough) contribute to the coat becoming tangled.

Re: Detangler for pigs? I will try a comb! Thanks... What do you mean a butt bath, just a bath on the butt...sorry if its obvious what a butt bath is :P I use a sensitive puppy shampoo. I'll cut down on the bath time and see if that helps. I dont have hidey houses anymore they stopped using them and they were taking up space..but they do have a fabric tunnel thing its pritty wide. Thanks for the help.

Re: Detangler for pigs? You can also do just a plain water rinse to keep the ends of her hair and her tummy tidy, can't you?

Re: Detangler for pigs? I dont think just plain water would get it clean. You would have to use shampoo to clean the pee off... I think im going to just shave the underside near her butt/belly area that way that area where it gets dirty the most will be short. But she will still have the long hair in the back. If that makes sence. But she still gets a lot of tangles. Maybe I will have to brush twice a day.

Re: Detangler for pigs? Butt baths are just that, where you give a partial bath but don't get the whole pig wet.
