Loss of hair

Another black peruvian (a rescue from about 3 years ago) named Ebunny (because he has a bunny face) has been a bit of a sickly pig since the beginning, but he is our miracle guinea pig... every day he lives is a day of grace. He has a heart murmur and has been dealing with impaction lately. But we are most worried about his loss of hair on the back and sides of his back legs. In fact, his hair seems to be coming out considerably from all over.

It may be that he's coming close to Rainbow Bridge, but if there is something we can do for him, we will.

Any thoughts on hair loss?

Dwaine

Re: Loss of hair

Yes, I agree with dagwell, most likely a pest like mites or lice. Has he been itching alot? Definitely take him for a visit to the vet if he's been that ill.

Re: Loss of hair

dagwellismypigy, no, Ebunny does not itch or have scabs. As I said, he has a heart murmur and has never weighed more than 2 lbs, 2 oz. When we found him 3 years ago, someone had put him in a garage to die, with no food or water. He should have died, but was nursed back to a semblance of health. There is not a mite or lice issue with Ebunny. He's just losing hair on the back of his legs, but there is not any skin irritation.

Re: Loss of hair

I would take him to the vet then. That's the number one source of info for me! I had no idea what my piggies had a year ago, so I asked the vet. It turned out to be mites( I was a inexperienced owner back then) but it could have been fatal if they hadn't seen it.
