Help with choosing two...

Hello......I am new to the world of guinea pigs and doing my best to research them first. I do know that I need to get two so they have a buddy and I am glad I found this site to be able to build a good cage.

My question is.....which is the best combination of pig sexes? Two boys, two girls, or a neutured boy and girl? It seems that sometimes they will fight?

Any help is much appreciated!

Re: Help with choosing two...

Two females and two males will always bicker to establish dominance. They'll do that for the rest of their lives, but unless there's physical fighting, it isn't something to be worried about. I don't know about male/female pairs, though.

I have two males in one cage and they're fine. It just depends on the personality of the pigs. One is very dominant and the other is skittish and quiet. So it works.

If you get ones from a rescue that are already bonded, as long as cage space is adequate, you don't really have anything to worry about.

I'd go by personality than gender.

Go to a shelter or rescue and meet different pigs: Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten.

Another idea would to adopt an older pig to go with a younger pig. Good luck finding piggies to adopt. Be sure and share pigtures when you do.

I've got three boys in a cage and they get along fine. Find two with personalities you like and do what the others have said and you'll be fine!

Re: Help with choosing two...

Thanks everyone! I just recently found out that animal shelters have guinea pigs.....so I am glad to go there and find two that way.

I live near Houston.....and the SPCA seems to have more than their fair share so that should be a good place to start.

Thanks for the advice!
