Pregnant Piggy Help Please

I'm a first time piggy owner and we just adopted 2 new piggy's about 30 days ago from a family who could no longer take care of them. 1 boy (meeko) 1 girl (minky). They were being housed together so we knew there was a possibility that minky would be preggers. I was giving her a bath and realized that she was very large on one side of her stomach, so it looks like im going to be a grandma! That was pretty much confirmed when i could feel the babies moving now. I have been lurking for a few days now and since i have learned that i need to separate them now so she wont get preggers right after birth. my question(s) is if i separate her and maybe keep her in my room so i can keep and eye on her better will she get depressed? what should i do? This will be her first litter so i want to be extra careful. Also im not sure how far along she is, i know its probably imposable to guess how many and when but i will post pictures for reference. Any comments and feedback would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

Re: Pregnant Piggy Help Please

And you didn't separate them right away because? She may not have been pregnant yet when you got her but leaving them together the extra month would have definitely done it. Gestation is 59-73 days.

How old is she? Are they related?

Here: Guinea Lynx :: Breeding and Guinea Lynx :: Reproduction . Have a good vet lined up in case of complications Guinea Lynx :: Finding a Veterinarian and Guinea Lynx :: Hand Feeding

A vet would be able to tell you how many babies there are. If you can feel movement, it shouldn't be more than 1-3 weeks after you feel movement.

Remove any male babies at 3 weeks.

They are peruvians.
Be careful when handling her now that you know she's pregnant. Support her well with both hands.
When the babies are born you will need to separate the boys out when they're 3 weeks old or else they can make the mama and sisters pregnant.

Re: Pregnant Piggy Help Please

Thanks. That website is awesome! I noticed she was preggers the day after i got her home when i was bathing them. They are in seperate cages i was just wondering if i move her cage to my room to keep an eye on her if she will be ok or would it be to tramatic for her? Im not sure if they are related, the previous owner got them from a petshop.. would it be bad if they are?? im guessing they are about 5-6 months old. thanks!

Inbreeding is not good, no... not even for humans.

Re: Pregnant Piggy Help Please

After reading the post about inbreeding I did search, from what I hear as long as its not generation after generation of inbreeding they should be ok. Of corse im not sure their history since previous owners got them from the pet store when they were babies.

My question was if I separate her and maybe keep her in my room so I can keep and eye on her better will she get depressed without him being in the same room? He is really loud at night and it would be hard to wake up everytime I heard something, she is normally pretty quiet so I could listen for her. Should that even be a risk I should take? Thanks!

Baby Has Arrived!!

When I came home from work today and found the most adorable thing i have ever seen!! Minky had a beautiful bundle of joy! There was only one baby, she looks wonderful and she is such a good mommy. She is up around eating and drinking like normal, the baby is following her around already and squeeking I felt her belly and it feels normal and she isnt bleeding or anything so It looks like everything went as planned. We havent named the baby yet, I want to see if its a girl or boy first. I hope its a girl!! Thanks for everything. I took a few pictures and I will be posting more later.

Re: Pregnant Piggy Help Please

If you can feel the babies it means she is at least 2 or 3 weeks along! When my ginny pig had babies I seperated her from her sister. The thing is she will be more relaxed if she is not with the male. Don't worry she will be fine away from her mate. For now!
