Question Just a couple of questions.

So i was wondering if this is normal behavior. This is my frist guinea pig and her name is Midnight Raine Echo, which is funny because she's actually white and brown, but anyway, the point is I looked a ton of information up on them but I'm still not sure.

I'm not really sure if she's "popcorning" but she just kind of runs in a cricle in her cage and then stops and will drink or eat and then start running again.
My mom walked in one day and was like is she okay, go talk to her before she hurts herself. So if anyone can tell me if that's normal behavior it would be greatly appreciated.

And also I was wondering if salt wheels are good for them?

Sorry I wrote soo much and thanks for the helpp.

Re: Just a couple of questions.

Salt and mineral wheels are a big no.

Her running isn't popcorning, but her doing laps. We call it Piggie Nascar in our house because all of them get to doing circles together and it looks like they're racing.

Popcorning is when they sorta jump and twist in the air. Youtube "guinea pig popcorning" and you'll see hundreds of videos of it!

Re: Just a couple of questions.

Also, can their food pellets be kept in their cage all day or should I take it out and only give it to her at certain hours and can it be mixed with other food or does it have to be plain pellets?

Re: Just a couple of questions.

Pellets should be plain with no dried or coloured bits. Good brands are Oxbow and Kleenmama's. If she is a young pig, she should be fed alfalfa based pellets as they are higher in calcium, over 6 months she should be on a timothy hay based pellet. She should be fed only 1/4 cup of pellets per day.
Your pig should also have unlimited grass hay (Timothy is a common type of grass hay). If she is under 6 months, she can have a legume hay like alfalfa mixed into her grass hay.
She should also be being fed a cup of fresh veggies per day. Fruits can also be fed, but sparingly (only once or twice a week at most). There are stickies in the diet and nutrition forums to learn more about her diet.

Re: Just a couple of questions.

Thanks so much.
I bought a starter kit from a pet store, but I didn't get her from a pet store, my neighbor had two and one was pregent (she's not a breeder, so it wasn't planned) so she gave one to me because frankly I think she has too many animals already. I would love to get her a bigger cage but saddly we just don't have the room for it (or the money) but she was living in a small dog crate with two other piggies before so I don't think she minds mine now. But I give her Timothy Hay everyday becsue she sure can eat.
I am also using the pellets that have things mixed in with it. I went everywhere and they don't have any pellets without it, so tomorrow or this weeknd hopefully I'm going to the feed store and see if they have any there. I took most of the mixed stuff out, but she only eats the pellets anyway.
Thanks so much for the help though and please ignore the mistakes because i wrote way to much .

Re: Just a couple of questions.

No salt licks. It's fairly inexpensive to build a C&C cage. She at least needs plenty of out of cage exercise if her cage is smaller.

Re: Just a couple of questions.

Defineitely try to look into a C&C cage in the future. It only cost me right at $40 to buy all the supplies and build my 2X4 I had. Now I have a 3X7, but it took a lot more supplies .

But I would say you are off to a good start. I would definitely re-sex the pig just to be sure you do have the sex you were told. Many people do get it wrong.
