Is this normal? My guinea pig looks like he has a little bit more hair loss behind his ear-I know they are suppose to be missing some, but its missing it a little bit more. Also he has some dried white stuff just above his nostrils-is he sick? Info that might be helpful: My dad knows what mites look like, and he didn't see any when he checked. I fed the pig a grape and a salad earlier and this wasn't here-could it just be some food dried to his nose? We did just get a cat, but the two haven't met yet and the cat is healthy. We don't take piggie outdoors much, so there isn't anywhere that he could get mites. Please reply asap!

Re: Is this normal? Does his breathing sound normal when you hold his chest by your ear? Or is it dry and raspy? Did you get him from a petstore? If you did he might have a URI as petstore pigs are often sick.

Re: Is this normal? We did buy him from a pet store about 2 or 3 years ago, before we knew they were bad. He was fine then, and so I'm assuming he is fine now. My dad and I looked over all the pages about mites and hair loss etc on guinea lynx, and we think that he is fine. But any other info would be appreciated!

Re: Is this normal? Pigs are normally bald behind their ears so that's most likely normal. Mites cannot be seen with the naked eye, they are microscopic so your dad wouldn't have seen any mites on the pig. Fleas and lice on the other hand can be seen with the naked eye. Mites often lay dormant in pigs and come out in times of stress or illness. Has there been any signs of scratching or hairloss in your pig lately? It could be dried food on your pigs nose or it could be something else. Was the spot there yesterday? Have you tried washing his nose to see if it comes off? Has your guy's appetite been normal? Any increase or decrease in eating or drinking? Sneezing? Labored or raspy breathing? Lethargy?

Re: Is this normal? His breathing sounds like pretty normal-kind of like he might have just a bit of a cold. We have been turning the air conditioning on alot-maybe that gave him a piggie cold?

Re: Is this normal? It could be that the air is a bit dry for him. My pigs sometimes have that problem and we just turn on a humidifier to a low setting.

Re: Is this normal? I will try to wash off the spot and see what happens. It wasn't there a few hours ago-my dad thinks that it might just be dried grape juice since the piggie ate one earlier. He hasn't had any other hair loss, but I will check him over in a few minutes.

Re: Is this normal? I added additional questions to my above post. Pigs don't get colds, they get URI's and if caught at the earlier stages they are pretty easy to cure with Antibiotics. Pigs are good at hiding illnesses though. Air conditioning won't cause a URI unless your family is running it really cold.

Re: Is this normal? I tried to wash off the stuff and it didn't come off. It looks like his hair is like kind of stuck together-but I looked over the mite pages and it's not the eggs or whatever. This will sound gross, but just bear with me: I flipped him over to check for hair loss, and noticed a thing sticking out of his butt. I pulled it out and it was like a longish yellowey thing with some white goo at the end. My dad thinks it was just some cilantro since he ate some of that today. No hair loss by the way, and my dad said his breathing is normal.

Re: Is this normal? His eating habits are normal-he ate his salad right up and still wants more haha. I gave him some hay and he dug right in. Still drinking his water. Well our thermostat I think its called is a little wacky, so we let the air conditioning run until it gets a little to cold for comfort and then we turn it off, turn it back on when it gets hot, etc.

Re: Is this normal? It sounds like he might be impacted, but I'm not sure as I've never dealt with an impacted boar before.
