Introducing piggers to each other?

Hi there! As a new piggers mom, I have two very young girls in my house, who I'm acquiring materials to build a nice big C&C cage for.

However, I just found out that there's a family nearby who have two 10 month old girls that they have to give up, because of moving difficulties and family problems. They have a nice big C&C cage of their own already, too.

Being that they're both bonded pairs, is it a bad idea to try to introduce them on neutral ground and work them up to sharing a big ol' piggie palace? I'm not sure how it works. I imagine that since they're young, now would be a good time for introductions, BUT I don't know if it works the same way with bonded pairs.

I just really don't want to let these girls, who are spoiled and love kids and are treated so well, go to a home where they won't be appreciated. It WOULD be possible to have two different cages, but it seems it would be so nice to have them together!

My family think I'm a little crazy, but I think they're happy that I'm no longer pressuring them to let me have cats! I love my piggers too much already, and they won't claw up the leather sofa. ;-)

Re: Introducing piggers to each other?

Read www.cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm. Even bonded pairs can be successfully intro'd to other pigs and other pairs to live altogether. I've done it with a total of 7 sows.

Just make sure you do quarantine procedures before you introduce them. Quarantine is not just for new pigs coming in to your home but for your existing pigs as well. Quarantine is 3 weeks in a separate room.

Re: Introducing piggers to each other?

Females will just about get along with all other females. Make sure you do introduce them in neutral ground and clean the cage throughly so no smells will be left. This includes all hideys, tunnels, toys everything. 4 sows will need a cage at least 2X6. Of course more would be better.

If you think you can handle it, I say go for it.

Re: Introducing piggers to each other?

I was already planning a 2x5 with a second level, so really, adding two grids doesn't take THAT much more of my living room... hee hee. And since their cage is already C&C, they're coming equipped with the extra grids I'd need for it. Hee hee.
Thanks for the info!

Re: Introducing piggers to each other?

That's how I got all my grids as well. I had a 2X4 for my one piggy, then adopted 2 more that had a C&C cage as well. Now I've adopted two more that also came with a C&C cage. So now I have stacks of cubes sitting in a box under my cage. It does help out so much when they come with the cubes and Coroplast to be able to add onto yours.
