New Pig and Question about it's sex Hello Everyone, Well the friend that had the guinea with dry skin gave gave him to me. I saw him scratching his face this morning. We are taking him to the vet this weekend. He is very young not sure how old. He came with a big pet store cage but no worries we are upgrading him to a C&C Cage. He is so sweet and he just sits with you. He has already eaten some lettuce and strawberries and pellets. hasn't touched the hay much more than move it around. My friend got him from a pet store and they said he was a he but we all know how that goes. I looked up the sexing page on here and can't tell. He is still so small so not sure. What do you guys think? W want to know the sex for sure before we name him. Thanks so much. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...7/IMG_0480.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...7/IMG_0492.jpg

Re: New Pig and Question about it's sex Treat him for mites Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites Skip the skin scrape if the vet suggests it. Can you post a closer and clearer pic? It's hard to tell from that pic esp. since there is calcium deposits on the genitals. It looks like a sow to me from that pic but I'd need a clearer pic to tell.

Re: New Pig and Question about it's sex Gently rub a dilute vinegar solution over the area. It'll be a slow process so you might have to do it in stages, but it should dissolve it over time. Be gentle and patient. Someone else might have a better idea.

Re: New Pig and Question about it's sex Looks like mites to me as well. I also think it looks female, but again, with the angle it's hard to tell.

Re: New Pig and Question about it's sex Since I am not a vet I can't say for sure whether it's a male or female. Usually when I get a guinea pig I always check the sex for myself to make sure I am only getting males, since the first one I got was male. Usually if it is a female the genital area will be a "Y" shape or similar with no little bump in the middle. Also on a female the nipples tend to be slightly larger. If it is male, from my experience the genitals usually have more of a circle shape with a tiny bump in that middle of that circle. As the guinea pig ages it will be easier to tell. If you are still not sure, you could always stop by your local vet office to make sure! Hope I helped!

Re: New Pig and Question about it's sex Pet stores pigs are usually about 4 weeks when they put them on the shelves. Depending on how long your friend had him, I would say about 6-8 weeks maybe.
