Getting Two New Boars

OK, well I've decided to adopt two new boars. They are a very bonded pair named Fuzz and Piggles. They are coming from a wonderful home where they were taken excellent care of. The lady has become extremely allergic to the piggies and accommodated to her allergies enough to keep them, but can't spend much time with them. So the two of us decided I would take them and add them to the 3 boars I have now.

They will be kept in their separate colonies at least through quarantine, but then I would like to try and house them all together. Now, I'm not getting my hopes up on this or anything as I know the odds are stacked up against me really. But I was curious as to what some of the piggie owners on here that have large herds suggest me do. I don't want to even try if there's a chance it will break up the harmony my boys already have to the point that I will end up with multiple loner pigs. There is no problem with them living in separate cages, it's nice to think about .

Any suggestions other then basic intro advice is completely welcome or any warnings on not trying is also greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

I am so interested in reading replies to this post. I think you may be headed for trouble but I am no expert. I had to rehome a boar and try again with another just to get a pair that would bond.

Well, luckily with my 3 I have now, intros went very smoothly. There was some rumblestrutting and mounting, but no fights at all. And these two that are coming are supose to be very bonded. They also lived in a Trio of boars before the third passed away recently of cancer.

They will definately live in their own C&C Cages for about a month in seperate rooms. Then I was going to put the cages beside each other, but not let them have any one on one contact yet. If all that went smoothly, I was going to try and combine the two cages and have them live together, cleaned out and after intros of course.

But, if I get an overwhelming reponse that I shouldn't even try to combine, then I wont. The two cages will not take up any more/less space then if I combined them. I guess this will just be a no rush situation that will be see as we go.

Well, just thought I would let everyone know that Fuzz and Piggles are here. They are very tubby piggies nearing the 4# mark. Piggles seems to be in the early stages of impaction though. He looks really flabby down there and every time I pick him up, there is always a pellet that falls out. Then I just realized Fuzz has a lump on his back just to the right side of his spine. I will be taking them both in to work with me tomorrow to be looked over.

They are in quarantine right now and haven't seen the original boys yet. They are very affectionate pigs. Love to be cuddled constantly.

I'm so glad you were able to get them. They are very handsome boys. I hope the vet visit goes well and it's minor problems. I have 4 boys in one cage together and when I adopted 2 more boys, they did not do well and blood was shed. But, I have heard of people having 7 and up in the same cage. Good luck if you do try to introduce them to your current herd.

Wow, this was on page 3. I had to really look to find it . Well, the boys are doing great. Piggles does have impaction problems, no biggie and Fuzz's lump were just fatty tumors so that's great also. They have been here about two weeks now and I'm getting anxious to see how the groups react together.

I have noticed that Fuzz is very dominant to wards Piggles, he is always rumble strutting. And Grizzly, one of my Original boys is the same way. So I'm a little nervous in trying to house them together with two very dominant boys in each group.

I have divided the cage with a barrier of grids between the two and they seem happy, so I think I will just keep it this way. The three boys are in a 3X4 and the two in a 3X3. So in total it is a 3X7. I am very happy with all my boys and have been told I am at my capacity .

I guess we'll have to see how that goes.
