Away

I have a question. What do you do if you have a Cavy and you have to go away for a bit. I am going to a trip for 3 weeks (I dont have pigs but if I did)
and what would you do? I dont have any friends or relitives to care for it (if I had one).

Re: Away

You have a few options. There are people who will come to your house and take care of your pets for a fee. Try asking at your vet office or local shelter. There are always flyers at my local vet office for people offering pet sitting services. They should be able to give references or your vet or shelter should be able to tell you about the person.

2nd you can use a boarding service. Again ask at your shelter or vet. More expensive and stressful for the animals but then you don't have a stranger coming into your house.

3rd you can post on sites like this that you are going to be gone and see if any other pig owners in your area would be willing to take your pigs in during that time.

Re: Away

Not possible when most of your trips involve long car drives and camping withl 12 high prey driven akitas. Aside from the insanity we already have guinea pigs would end up lunch by the time we got home.

Re: Away

I agree the best thing is to send them to a boarding place and sometimes when your gone for more than 15 days they give you a discount!

Re: Away

I prefer not to go the boarding place route. The cages are HEAPS smaller than what I would like, and it is SUPER expensive. Last time I went away, I had friends come over. I set up a whole list of things that needed to be done and when, plus money and a list so that they could go and get more veggies if need be.

Re: Away

My first choice would not be boarding. It is generally the most stressful for the animal unless you have a very outgoing friendly dog. I don't know any cats or small animals that would be outgoing enough not to be completely freaked and stressed out by boarding. In some circumstances it would be even more stressful to the pigs than taking them along with you. It would be my last resort. The best choice is to try to keep them at home and have someone check on them daily but that isn't always possible. 2nd best would be finding someone willing to take the whole cage and everything into their home to care for them.

Re: Away

I would try as much as you can to not board, we boarded our dog before when we had to go away and couldn't take him, and when we came to get him he was SOOOOO scared, and acted really shy, wich was unlike him, but he got over it by the next day, but still if we was alive (had to be put down) I wouldn't want to do it again.
