Careless Boo

Well I kept on asking my mom about a Guineapig and she thinks I will stop liking it when I get into high school, which is not true! Now since I think she wants to prove me wrong (which she wont!) she told me I can get one thing, a laptop or a Cavy. This is the most hardest decition(spl) in my life. I'm gonna try to mooch my way out of this by getting both. All I want for my B-day is my mom promising me a Cavy and a laptop. I think she might give in but I need to decide soon. Its mean to make someone choose over something they love and REALLY want.

Re: Boo

I seldom seen positive result with a laptop in high school. And that includes me. It is so powerful, irresistible, addictive toy that ruined much of my social life and emotional development.
I would go for a pair of Cavies, but then are you ready for the responsibility? How about after you finish high school?

Re: Boo

I would go for the laptop. If your parents aren't willing to get you 2 pigs and provide for them in every way, c&c cage, high quality hay, pellets, fresh veggies every day, vet visits and any other care needed for healthy cavies, then you should wait until you are older and can provide all of that yourself.

Re: Boo

It all depends on whether your parents are willing to provide the neccesseties (sp) that come with having guinea pigs that you are unable to provide. Sit down and have a serious conversation with them and list everything that comes with having Piggers. Whether you like it or not they are going to find out one way or another. The only difference is that if they find out after you get them it may be to late. ALso, you have to be willing to provide things that your parents can not. Like, holding them, cleaning up they yuckies , feeding them on time, and fitting them into your schedule. I'm not saying this as if they are an appointment of course! But, even after a year of sesearch I found having my girls over whelming! Good luck!

Re: Boo

I also vote for the lap top. With proper care the piggys should live longer than the 4 years you will be in high school. What are you going to do with your pigs when you have to leave for college?

Re: Boo

Speaking as a parent, I would say get the laptop. In the long run, it's much cheaper than a guinea pig. Laptops don't need cages, bedding, hay, veggies, toys, cleaning up after, vet visits or medicine. And if you ignore it, the laptop won't suffer. A guinea pig would.

I think you will also get much more use out of the laptop. Think of research papers, homework, etc.

Getting a pet is not something to take lightly. I'm not trying to upset you, but you really need to make sure that you have the time and resources to properly take care of it.

Good luck in your decision.

Re: Boo

As a former highschool student (class of 08) I got my pigs when I was in nineth grade so I have a similar story, It is really hard balancing pigs and homework and if you want to have a outside life you are going to have to have a strict routine. I know I would get up an half an hour earlier so I could sit with my boys before I had to get ready for school, then I would come home do homework, talk to the pigs for an hour or so then spend the rest of the night with my boyfriend. Guinea pigs are a lot of work, you have to think of this before you jump on board. They are well worth it and I dont regret those early mornings, and they will be moving with me where ever I go. But you want to make sure you can afford everything. I normally spend ten bucks every month on shavings, ten bucks a week on veggies, 8 every two week on food and hay. Thats about average. It seems like it isnt too much but when you want to go to the movies or the mall but you have to buy shavings it can be hard. Just make sure you are ready for this. Its a lot of work but it pays off when you see how cute and big they grow and how much they love you.

When you're a grownup, you can adopt pigs AND have a laptop.

I completely agree! I have wanted cavies for quite a while, but my parents knew I couldn't handle the responsibility when I was younger. It's alot easier to care for them once you have a good job and can pay for all their necessities and not have to worry about asking your parents to take you/your piggies to the vet if something were to happen, and believe me it will. You are lucky enough for your mom to want to get you a laptop, I say go for it. I had to wait until I was moved out, married , and could pay for one on my own along with the majority of people who own a laptop. I actually married a great guy who already had one As for the piggies, I know it is hard to wait , but believe me it will be worth it. Just use this time , and your laptop, to learn more about them so once you adopt a pair you can give them the best life possible.

Re: Boo

Weighing in as a parent of both kids and piggs, I think that the advice you have received is excellent. No matter how magnanimous (sp?) your folks are, you are always going to be subject to their decisions, which will affect your pigg cage placement, time available for care, expenses, etc. Piggies are expensive and food ain't getting cheaper. I remember how hard it was to wait for something when I was younger, but unless you can guarantee enough time and money for your piggies, waiting may be the wiser choice.

Re: Boo

I've got piggies and a laptop and I'm er...in a high school. Or if your in America, it's when you fifteen isn't it??? I don't know.
Laptops are dangerous things, especially with internet!!! I would defninitely go for two cavies if I were you. But then again, you don't have to have much responsibility with laptops...Although you might have trouble getting off it...Actually, I'd go with the laptop!!!
