I want a piggy!!! Hey guys! I'm hoping someone can help me. I've been reading all about piggies for a week. Some have told me they were hard to care for. That they smell and you will constantly be changing the cage. How true is all this? Please be honest Also, the only place around here that I know of to get one is at Petsmart.I just read another thread and I'm thinking Petsmart is not a good idea...??? Do I buy from a breeder? How do I find one? Should I buy one? Would two be better? I know the more you have the more work in caring for them but would I be asking for trouble so to speak? What about sex...two females...or two males? I'm sure I'll be back to ask more questions

Re: I want a piggy!!! As long as you have a proper cage (see cavycages C&C ones) and clean it regularly, they do not smell. I hear this a lot. Not true. I think it's because most people had pet store sized cages, which are too small. Where are you located? We can help you find a rescue pig or a shelter with piggies. Don't go to a pet store. www.petfinder.com www.cavyrescue.com www.gpan.net

Re: I want a piggy!!! getting pigs from a shelter or a gp rescue is the best option, avoid getting one from a petstore or breeder. Keep an eye on the classifides in your local newspaper, alot of people cant keep their pets because they move or whatever and list their pet in these sorts of places. maybe start by calling local shelters and watching classifides?

Re: I want a piggy!!! Hi 1) Its best to adopt a guinea pig rather than buying one from a breeder or pet store 2) I clean out the cage properly twice a week, but I sweep up everyday 3) Two are definately better than one. Guinea pigs are social animals and they prefer to live in pairs or groups 4) It doesn't really matter whether you get 2 boys or 2 girls. 5) They are great animals. They are vocal and love to be cuddled. Check out www.guinealynx.com or www.cavyspirit.com The best information about guinea pigs is on these websites

Re: I want a piggy!!! welcome. If you just keep up with the cage and do regular cleaning and care it wont smell at all. I spot clean everyday cause I have a pregnant one. Once she has her babies then I spot clean about ever 3 or 4 days and clean the whole cage about every 2 to 3 weeks depending on their activities. I have a very large cage for the girls and boys. I have a 5x5x1x1 cage for the girls and the boys got a 5x2 cage. They all love the room they got and they get wonderful excersizes everyday. You should build a 2x4 or bigger and rescue or adopt pairs or more. Make sure they are same sex unles they are fixed. Good luck and hope everyones advice helps ya
