Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... I just read the Admin post about all the reasons not to adopt from a pet store. Other than promoting mills, etc... I find some of the same health concerns from adopting from craigslist. I don't know these people either and the gal I just emailed has several young (10 weeks old) and 2 that are a year old. And she claims she's getting rid of all her piggies. I just see the same health risks, URI, mites, genetic predisposition to tumors,etc... and am too fearful to adopt from a stranger. I really really want to adopt from the Humane Society - I'm not sure why - I wouldn't know the background of those pets either, but I would hope that at least they'd have been looked over by a vet and be healthy? I really want another piggie and am just stuck on where to get him. I'm not going back to the petstore, but I'm getting anxious.

Re: Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... I think Craigslist is a great place to find pets in need of homes. Actually 7 of my 12 came from Craigslist. The other 5 came from a Humane Society but you are right and neither source really knows much about their history, in general. I think Humane Societies and rescues tend to be more honest about the animals because they want the adoptions to work out so they want you to know all the potential problems up front. Many people will post on Craigslist before taking their animals to a Humane Society, so when you think of it that way it might not seem so troublesome to you. If you have a bad feeling about the person then you probably shouldn’t interact with them further but I think there are many good intentioned (albeit sometimes uneducated when it comes to piggy care) people who just don’t know what they are taking on when they get pigs and look to find homes for them themselves rather than taking them immediately to a shelter.

Re: Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... The thing with craigslist is you have to be careful. You can find honest people who don't have the time or money for their pets, or in common cases with guinea pigs, their kids stop taking care of them. But, many times back yard breeders will also try to sell animals on there. And from the sound of it the person you are talking about is a probably back yard breeder (or backyard breeder who is quiting). I wouldn't get your piggy from her.

Re: Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... Ditto Jenni. Are the two adult ones they have the babies' parents? It may have been an accidental litter due to missexing but you want to make sure it isn't an intentional breeder.

Re: Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... I just got 2 girls from CraigsList. For some reason- call it Fate- I happened to look one day (I almost never do), and there were 2 girls who needed a good home. The woman had gotten them from a shelter, they were healthy, well cared for (altho in a too small cage), and recognize me as Food Queen. They are the darn loudest wheekers I have had.

Re: Regardning adoption from Craigslist.... Have you tried looking on petfinder? There are always pigs in my area on there. Most all shelters and rescues will post animals on this site. Here is the link just in case Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. I also think the person you are dealing with is a backyard breeder getting out of the business as well. Just the fact that the parents are 2yrs themselves sounds like she ahs been breeding them and this is the last litter she wants to deal with. I would either wait for someone else on CL, or try the petfinder link. Good luck!
