Question Shy Guinea Pigs...Please help.

I just bought a couple of guinea pigs, momma Lola and baby Peanuts. I built them a large C&C cage, babyproofed and all. They seem to enjoy it, but only when no one's around. The minute anyone approaches they dive into their hidey house. Is this just a phase? Is there any way I can make their adjustment easier?

Thanks for the help!

It's piggies instinct to run and hide. They will do this until they realize you bring food. All you can really do is spend lots of time just sitting by the cage with your hand inside to get them used to you. Hand feeding veggies help out too. Try not to chase them around too much and eventually, you will see them come around.

Patience and more patience. It's very rewarding and you will be very excited with every little bit of progress.

Bribery is encouraged!

Re: Shy Guinea Pigs...Please help.

It took two or three weeks before my pigs realized I was "Goddess of Food." Now, all but one of them rush over to see me when I come by to visit...even the shy one is starting to come around. Some are just less stubborn I suppose, !

Re: Shy Guinea Pigs...Please help.

Don't worry, one of my guinea pigs took 6 months to get used to me. But after he did, he was friendly. Most guinea pigs are skittish when you first get them, especially when they have not been around people that much.
