Spca

I really want a Guinea Pig! My mom said I might get two in september. Should we get them at the SPCA? Since there's no breeders in the area. I need to kow every thing about them! If I know alot about them then there's more of a chance I will get them. I already know the cage limits and sizes, but I need to know more.

Any info would be greatly apperecaited!

Re: Spca

The SPCA would be a great place, but yes, you really need to learn more about cavy's(guinea pigs)
Well, first off, never get a piggie at a breeder or petstores. They are unhealthy, mistreated, and there are way too many piggies out there that lose there life because someone buys a piggie instead of adopting. Next I woul suggest learning about their nutrition. Hers a great nutrition chart showing all the food piggie can eat and how much: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html

Cavy's need at least 1 cup of veggies a day. They also always need pellets and hay. Hay should be unlimited, but depending on the age of your pig, the pellets may need to be limited. If your guinea pig is 6 months or younger, they need unlimited pellets. Older than 6 months and the piggie should only have about 1/8th cup a day.

Also, the best thing you can do to learn more about guinea pigs is to read all the stickies (the blue links above each forum) and to ask as many questions as you can. Everyone here is so helpful and nice. We all have a guinea pigs best needs at heart.
I would also strongly suggest talking with your parents about guinea pig care and make sure before you make any decisions, that they are 100% willing to pay for ANY vet bills, no matter how expensive. If they don't like that, then I would not get a cavy. You can't sacrafice you pets health.
To learn more about piggie health and care, take a look at guinea Lynx: Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig
Read up everything, it will really really help.
Just so you know, piggies need their nails clipped. I hope this helps!

Re: Spca

I would also do a search for rescues in your area. Many do not have the funds to advertise. You can also ask the SPCA if they know of a Guinea pig rescue.

Re: Spca

I asked my mom and she told me she would take a guinea pig to the vet! The reson I am waiting until september is that I am going away for 3 weeks and no one could clean the cage or feed them there proper diet. Is that the responsible thing to do?

Re: Spca

That sounds very responsible to me!

Plus, you could gather everything you need during the summer, and have it all set up before you even start looking.

Thats a great idea! I must order a C&C cage, or try and build one,
and what hay is ok for them, I know timothy hay and alfafla hay (not to much) but is there any others like meadow hay? Also are those Living World treats ok for them?

Re: Spca

My girls prefer orchard grass to timothy, but any grass hay is fine (by "grass hay" I mean not a legume like alfalfa or grain like oat--though these are fine for occasional treats, I think).

Are the Living World treats those really cool looking huts and logs and such? If so, those aren't good, because the honey in them makes them too high in sugar.

Re: Spca

I don't buy any pet store treats. THey all have something in them that's not good for the pigs. I would just stick to veggies and limited fruit for treats.
