New Pig and Cat Sorry guys, I dunno what the heck I did on the first one. My question was, do any of you have cats and piggies that coexist? The only way for the kitty to get to the pig would be it's paws through the top of the cage. It's up high so there isn't anywhere for him to stand but on top. I don't want my poor piggy to be freaked out all the time though. What do you guys think about that? I do intend to spray kitty down when he does get up there, but when I'm not home, well you know. I really want to adopt this one that has been abused and neglected, tearing up my heart. I don't want to put my piggy in a bad situation either though. What's your experiences?

Re: New Pig and Cat I have two cats and they don't mind the guinea pig and vice versa. When Cookie is in the kitchen for floor time one of the cats likes to steal stray pieces of hay to eat. They have even gone nose to nose and neither cared. I think it all depends on the personality of both animals. Supervision is important.

Re: New Pig and Cat I have 2 cats and 3 pigs and I have a closed cage. The cats like to pat the pigs on the head. Neither cat has claws. They are not intrested at all in getting in the cage. Flash(male pig) will try to nose up the cats which just backs the cats up. I have never had a problem but I don't have true hunters. My cats are bed sleeping house cats.

| Re: New Pig and Cat Right now, I have 2 cats, they both do great with my Guinea Pigs, they are actually rather good friends. My pigs don't have a closed cage. If I would ever adopt another kitty I would definetly not let them together at first or freely as I do my cats now, I'd also close off the pigs cage. My cats are going on 6 years old and have been around GPigs since they were kittens, sometimes I feel as if they think they are piggies Here is a picture that I took a few days ago. ![]() (left to right: Chewie, Angel, Charlie, and in the front with his back to the camera, Hankie) Last edited by Jenni_Feathers : 04-16-08 at 06:27 pm. | Re: New Pig and Cat I have seven cats and they are so used to the piggs that they barely pay them any mind. They, the cats, sit by me on the couch when I have a pig on my lap. My Aussie dog even cleans piggy ears, much to their delight - not! The cats like to sleep on top of the cage when the sun is on it, but other than that, they don't bother them. Alot depends on your cat's temperment. I'm not sure I would leave any cat with a pigg unsupervised. A good cat is still a cat. |

Re: New Pig and Cat I have two cats and they don't mind the pigs at all. The thing that I do with my piggies cage though is that I put a blanket over the top (but not the sides, so there is ventilation) so that if my cat was to freak out some how that the blanket would be covering were she could possibly get her paws in. Always though watch your piggies with the kitties when they are together without anything between then. What I meant by that is watch the pigs and the cats when the piggies aren't in the cage. Sorry about my long chat

Re: New Pig and Cat My cats don't mind my pigs either. My eldest cat is 12 yrs and I haven't even seen her near the cage or the pigs since the night I first brought the pigs home. My other is a little more mischievous, he's 3 and likes to sit on top of the cage. While the piggies are having floor time, I usually put them in the large bathroom since the floor is easist to clean, with a baby gate blocking the doorway. Still all the cat does is sit on the other side of the gate trying to play with the piggies by sticking his paws through the gate and rolling on his back. I still put a kitty proof top on just in case. My dogs are another story however, but that would be a different post though. Great pic up top with kitties and piggies by the way!

Re: New Pig and Cat My 2 cats Abby and Charlie were curious about the piggies at first. Then the new wore off and they could care less. When my pigs are having floor time the cats will sometimes walk thru, but are soon bored. Every once in a while Abby will jump in the cage if I leave the lid open, but I just call her and she jumps out. She is just one of those really nosy cats. Charlie my 10 year old cat will come up while I'm holding one of the pigs under my chin and lay his head on who ever I'm holding and try to fall asleep. Even though they've never hurt them or acted like they'd attack them, I keep the lids to the cages down when I'm not in the room just in case.

Re: New Pig and Cat When I am home and I can watch him, my cat is allowed around the pigs, no worries. I keep the door to my bedroom (where the pigs are) closed when I'm not home because although I trust him with them, I don't want to take any chances. He is a cat and they are rodents. My experience was that giving them time to get used to each other and really watching their actions and behavior will tell you what you can/can't allow. My cat is rather afraid of the pigs, but VERY curious, but the pigs never ran from him and I always took that as them not being afraid of him. They would walk right up to the cage doors and rub noses with him, so that told me they didn't sense any danger from him. He sticks his paw in and "pets" them but I never worry. He is fully clawed but he's never shown any kind of aggression towards them. Like I said, though, I never allow him the opportunity to be alone with them. It depends on the animals, I think. Just watch everyone and you will be able to figure out what to do/allow with them.

Re: New Pig and Cat My cats want to play with the pigs, so just to base safe I lock them up when it's out of cage time. I think maybe the cats think they might be guinea pigs. They climb on top of the cage but can't reach any of the pigs. The only problem is that a few of the pigs get up on their hind legs prairie dog style to greet the cats. =P
