Carriers--Needed or not? I just randomly wondered about carriers for guinea pigs. Would I need them? Like, to go to the vet or to transport them somewhere else? If so, what kind? What would be best to fit 2 or 3 piggies? Thanks for helping!

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I wouldn't consider a carrier a must have item, but they come in handy in case of emergency's (fire, tornado, floods, etc.) and they are also helpful when taking them to the vet or on short car trips (like when moving). Most people use cat carriers, and one should be big enough for 2-3 pigs, one for a full grown cat ought to be big enough.

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I have a cat carrier that can hold all 3 pigs. They are nice to have for the car or to go to the vet. I have a soft one that zips around the top. I also have a small one that only one pig can fit in. I picked it up at a yard sale for a dollar. I don't need both but I have them if I need them.

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I use a collapsible crate with lid to transport my boys. I line the bottom with a towel and drape the crate with a throw when it's cold or windy. I also use it to seperate the boys when I need a urine or poop sample. When I'm done, it folds up flat and stores under their cage, with the rest of their supplies, until the next time. It was cheap (got it on sale), well ventilated and is easy to clean.

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I have a large dog carrier, which can house all 4 girls - but only for short trips such as to the vet. I also use it as a quarantine cage and a hospital cage. I line the base with towels, pop in a handful of hay and away we go. I often take a bag of wet veggies if the trips are long or as a reward/distraction.

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I used six grids and some leftover coroplast to make a totally secure 1x1 travel cage.

I'm one of those people that always worries about getting everyone out in a hurry if we need to, so I like to have something handy. Before that I used boxes we'd cut holes in, kind of similar to those temporary boxes you can get when you adopt cats from a humane society or a place like that. |

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? I have carry boxes for vets trips, but I also use them for weighing the girls. I have scales which you can put something on then press a button to set the scale to zero. I put the carrier on the scales, set the readout to zero then put one piggie in to give me their weight. I find it keeps them from walking off the scales and it takes less then one minute to weigh each one.

Re: Carriers--Needed or not? When I adopted my last two boars, one came home in a petstore cage, and the other was in a 2 X 1 grid C&C cage. I kept these put together in case I need them, but I also have many little pet taxi carriers for my cats that I can also use. They are just there in case something pops up unnexpectedly.
