People can be evil

I haven't had any guinea pigs for a long, long time, and getting more wasn't something that had really crossed my mind. But yesterday, while I was at work, my vet called me and asked if I might consider taking in a special case for awhile.

Apparently, someone dumped a pig at his office and took off. The pig had been horribly abused, and he thought she was going to need intensive nursing care in order to survive. Someone had tried to strangle her, with what we're not sure, and she actually had a ligature mark around her neck. An x-ray revealed damage to the internal structures of her neck. Per the vet, she was trying to wheek, but physically couldn't.

She also had several cigarette burns on her, was underweight, and dehydrated. They gave her pain medicine, antibiotics, fluids, and tried to keep her going.

I told them when I spoke to them that I thought honestly the kinder thing would be to euthanize her. She died on her own, though, in the middle of the night.

I work in a profession - nursing - that's all about caring about people. Granted, I work with children, who - for the most part - are defenseless and at the mercy of adults, just like animals are - and most of the time, I'm fairly optimistic about human beings, thinking that despite everything that goes on, it's because of ignorance, rather than just meanness or some inherent evil.

But people are really starting to make me sick. Perhaps it's because I've seen 4 cases of child abuse this week, one on a 2 week old baby; perhaps it's because I'm so !@#$% sick of people telling me how "tasty" their murdered animals are for lunch; and perhaps I've just heard too many stories like the one of this guinea pig, who never, ever stood a chance, through no fault of her own.

People can be evil.

*sorry for the rant*

Re: People can be evil

Grrr... Those people should be burned with cigarettes and be strangled. They should also go a day or two without food or water and see how they like it!!! She is in a much better place now though.

Everyone deserves a chance, no matter how small or how fuzzy they are.

Re: People can be evil

Aww that is awful. How can someone even think of doing such mean things to an animal. That is horid, does the vet have a security camera? Maybe they can identify the person, snd charge them. Wishful thinking I know.

So nice of your vet to try and fight for the sweet girl.
Rest in peace little girl.

She spoke to me in a dream, or rather, I think she might have been a central character in a dream that I just had a few minutes ago.

People can be just so stupid. I just don't understand the mentality of intentionally hurting something or someone smaller and weaker. What does it prove? People that do that are bullies and there should be stiffer penalties for abuses like those inflicted on children and animals.

I have *never* been a believe in the "eye for an eye" mentality, but I'm coming around. What is a fine to people who do things like this? Or even a few weeks in prison? I honestly think sometimes people come out of prison worse than they went into it, having learned nothing and certainly repenting nothing. Plus, it does absolutely nothing to make reparations to the victim. Certainly nothing can restore this particular pig's health, life, or repay the suffering she endured. It's just not fair.

I feel very naive to be upset by the notion that things just aren't fair, but I am upset by it. I feel shattered, somehow. I used to have great faith in humanity ... and I feel like it's just gone.

I hope she's happier.

That is awful! I am just so happy that she doesn't have to endure that hell any longer.

When something like this happens I feel so powerless. And I am in a way. I cannot go back in time and make things happen differently for those that are abused. I wish I could but unfortunately life just doesn't work that way. But what I CAN do is take care of the animals and children in my life right now. I have 3 guinea pigs, 3 nieces, and a nephew. Not to mention all the other loved ones I have been blessed with. Things like this remind me not to take for granted the role I play in the lives of others.

Re: People can be evil

Reading this.. I don't know what to think. People can definitely be mean. I'm glad the little pig isn't suffering anymore.

I took in a rescue baby a few months ago.. huge cigarette burns all along his body. Some of them have healed properly and some are still in the process, but he eats and drinks and is a real sweetheart...... in spite of it all.

Yeah I know the feeling. It hits hard and often for a while until you learn to become numb to travesties you can't prevent because they're beyond your control.

This post broke my heart.

I feel bad for her. I hope she is resting in peace now and will never have to suffer again.

Re: People can be evil

This just makes me so upset and sick at the thought of what humans can do, if they can torture a small defenless (sp) animal that done nothing wrong, what will they be like when they have children? (Hopefully they wont reproduce for everyones sake) But what will happen if their children start crying, screaming and shouting?

Makes you wonder what this world turning into...

Re: People can be evil

That was extremely hard to read. I was relieved when I read that the pig had passed. There's no reason for her to continue to suffer with wounds that likely couldn't be healed.

It's hard to understand how some people sleep at night.

Re: People can be evil

OK I work at an Animal Hospital and things like this happen all the time. It is absolutely horrible and the staff have to take this home with them b/c some things you just can't forget. I took in a Rottie puppy one time that had it's tail docked by the "BREEDER". She was 6 wks old, paralized from the resulting infection in her spine and brought in to be put to sleep. I adopted her against the advice of the Vets who believed she would never walk. Well, SIX years later and lots of steroid injections and therapy, she is living a very happy gratefull life with me! There is not a minute that she doesn't have a Tennis ball wanting me to throw it so she can drag up her hind end and fetch the ball. She's even learned how to bark with it in her mouth! Sorry if this isn't appropriate to have in the post, but it just hit so close to home! I applaud you for wanting to help save the poor piggies life!

Re: People can be evil

Well, don't take this the wrong way, but I didn't really want to. I originally thought the kinder option would be the have the pig euthanized, which is what I told the vet. But I did tell him that if he wanted to try to save her, I would be willing to take her in.

I guess there are only so many horrible things you can see before your opinion of people starts to permanently nose dive. I've just seen too many bad things lately ... too many cases of child abuse (including a 2 week old baby who was beaten to the point of having broken ribs, a 16 year old starved, drugged, and poisoned by her parents, and a toddler kicked off a balcony), seen too many children die from illnesses, and seen/heard of too many bad things happening to animals. It's starting to really get to me. And I don't quite know how to handle it, because I used to genuinely like people. So ... where do I go from here?

I just don't know.
