Gross Gross Gross!

This morning I went to feed the pigs veggies, and refresh their hay.

I pulled the hay out of the bag into the first cage, and out popped what looked like a snake skin..ok I'm not fearful of snakes in general.

So I reached in to pull it out, and it wasn't just a skin, but a chunk of dried up dead snake.

Ok that was it I was grossed out. I grabbed a paper towel and took all of the hay out, threw it into the garbage, chanting EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW!

How totally gross, I am traumatized...well ok not alot, but a little. I know hay comes from a field and creatures live in fields...but

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

You know I would have thrown out the entire bag as well! Then considered seeking psychological counseling for my pigs after the snake carcass traumatization!

Yeesh!

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

Ok....Ewwwwwwwwwww!

I'm not really afraid of any animals, bugs, etc. But - I am afraid of anything dead. Not sure why, but dead things really freak me out.

I'd be calling the hay manufacturer just to give them a heads up...or in your case....a snake part up. LOL

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
I'm a big baby when it comes to creepy crawlies and dead critters-my cat leaves us dead lizzards and every time I stumble on one I can't help it, I scream. A chunk of dead snake would have sent me over the edge!

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

Yuck! I was over at a friends house once and a dead mouse fell out of their hay bale. It was totally nasty. I sorta felt bad for the little guy though. Was the hay like commercially bought or was it from a local farm or something?

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

OK...EW!!!! I would have screamed and threw it right out. What brand of hay was it? I know some people find creepy crawlies in Kaytee. I myself found a dead cricket in that kind, so I switched to Oxbow, and haven't found one since.

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

Whhaa..that poor snake, I wonder what it all went through. That is really gross, I recentely found a dead dried cricket in my Kaytee hay too, and that little thing gave me the creeps - I can't even imagine finding a chunk of snake!

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

Not long ago I found something - either a poop from a cat or fox perhaps or something dead. I'm guessing something like a dead bird since it smelled musty/icky and not like poo. I didn't investigate what it was, just tossed it - and the rest of the bale- out in the trash. Ick. Another reason to check your hay over!

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

I'm guessing most of you folks don't have kids. I guess being a mom gets you more used to things. I would have thought the snake was nasty but it wouldn't have freaked me out. Having three kids tends to lower the gross factor.

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

Well considering that snakes DO eat mice. And if mice are found in the hay then it should be perfectly reasonable to find a snake in it, wouldn't it?

Re: Gross Gross Gross!

LOL

Yes I have kids, it was just the shock of it that grossed me out. That and I picked it up and held it before I realized what it was. BLECH!

I have held snakes before, mostly live ones, and unfortunately a few dead ones too! I just wasn't expecting it, and it was rather a large chunk!

It was a cheapo bag of Kaytee, which I usually DON'T buy! Serves me right huh? I usually buy from Sweet Meadow Farms online, but I ran out and didn't want the pigs to go without so I bought a little bag at Walmart over the weekend.

I will definately not be purchasing that hay EVER again! Nasty. I baled hay on a farm for quite a few years too, and never encountered anything in them. I know it can happen, but

No matter what brand you buy, there will be creepy crawlies somewhere.
