Prime?

How long is a pig in its prime? Coco is almost 4.5 years old, is he still in his prime?
What is the age span for it?

Re: Prime?

Life span is typically 5-7 years, but some people have guinea pigs between 7 and 9, 10 years.

I think guinea pigs over 5 are seniors.

Re: Prime?

What do you mean by "prime"? That's an awfully subjective term.

Re: Prime?

I would consider "prime" as the state of being fully mature, yet before anything begins to go wrong with the body that is age related.

This probably (definitely?) varies from pig to pig. I don't think you'll know for sure the span your pig is in its prime until you notice it becoming elderly/having age related problems, or until it passes away.

Re: Prime?

I think that it depends on alot of things, how well he was bred (genetics), how well he is cared for (quality of food, nice cage, safe bedding, etc.), and also how happy he is (has a buddy, get playtime, and attetion and stuff) The average life span for a Guinea Pig is 5-7 years, so I'd say he is just a bit past his prime...maybe sorta simular in age to a late 50's early 60's aged human.

Re: Prime?

As far as I'm concerned, as long as a pig is happy, healthy and active, he's in his prime, no matter what his age!

A family I was friends with growing up had one of their guinea pigs live to just over twelve years, and he was exactly the same happy little guy at eleven and a half as he was at a year old!
