What are "Lethal's"

I've read several posts on these and still don't really understand what they are. From what I've read, the best descriptive word would be "inbreeds". Could someone clear this up for me?? Thanks

Re: What are "Lethal's"

They are not inbred, rather they are a product of a double copy of a roan or dalmation gene. Any two roan or dalmation (coloration type) pigs can and will produce lethals, even if they are not related. One copy of the gene will express the colors, but receiving two will end up with physical deformities, generally including eye problems (blindness, micropthalmia, even no eyes), hearing problems, and tooth problems, though each is different, depending on their severity.

That's sort of a simplified explanation... salana is probably the most well versed in 'lethalology' and will have a more detailed one soon, I'm sure.

Re: What are "Lethal's"

Jennicat gave a good basic description. If you do a forum search for "lethals" you will find several threads that clearly describe what a lethal is. You want threads started by CavySpirit or salana.

Re: What are "Lethal's"

So if someone is breeding piggies, which I am NOT, does that mean it's a "crap shoot" whether you will get lethal's, or is it only from among sibling's?

Re: What are "Lethal's"

It has nothing to do with siblings. Lethals come from a roan or dalmation (genetic coloring abnormalities) being bred to each other. Please do the forum search I suggested with the keyword lethals, looking for threads started by salana or CavySpirit. Any of their threads will explain things much better for you.

That's the best thread in my opinion that explains lethals.

No. Regardless of whether or not the animals are related, there is a 25% chance that a "lethal" baby will result from a roan x roan or a dal x dal.
