Is Pumpkin over weight?

Pumpkin is around 6 or 7 months old and he is right at 3 pounds today, is this normal for his age? I am a bit afraid that he might be over weight! Thanks!!

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

Um, 3 pounds? I am not sure you are weighing him correctly.

Where are you getting 3 pounds?

This does not sound accurate.

Why do you think this is not accurate?
I took him on the bathroom scale with me, and then subtract my own weight from the total weight.. I think it shoud be accurate...

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

If I were you, I would invest in a grams/ounces scale just for Pumpkin... you should make sure you are getting his accurate weight, because three pounds at 6 months old is... well... strange.

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

My full grown male which is HUGE is not even three pounds.

I just think this sounds like the scale is off. I would not trust a scale like that.

I agree with the above post that you should use a kitchen scale that weighs in grams/ounces.

I have and 8 month old boar who is 2.5 lb. I honestly don't think this is accurate because he is HUGE!

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

While I really think you should invest in some good digital kitchen scales since bathroom scales are really only for large weights like humans, I wouldn't instantly dismiss him being 3lb. My biggest guinea pig hit the 1500grams mark, or 3.3lb/3lb 4oz mark when he was 8months old. At his peak 18months after he was born he hit the 3lb 9oz mark. He's not fat, he's just a big guinea pig. So I wouldn't worry too much aslong as he is getting limited pellets and daily exercise.

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

My full grown boar is 3.3lbs. You can get a kitchen scale for less than $5.00 at walmart. You will be able to keep track of pounds and ounces.

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

Wow! That does sound a bit large for a pig so young! I would weigh him on a kitchen scale to check and make sure it is accurate!

What do you feed your guinea pig in a day?

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

Thank you very much for all your advice.

I am almost sure Pumpkin is 3 pounds. my scale is a digital scale... it gives very accurate numbers to 1 decimal place, I didnt just put him on the scale alone, i took him with me on the scale, and then subtract my weight from the total weight. I think this method shoud work well. Anyways, I will weigh him in a kitchen scale to confirm it...

So if he is 3 pounds, that means he is definetly overweight.....and he just look like the cute one in the pics above, his head looks so small on his big round body.
I will update a recent pic of him when I got home later today.

Thanks!

Re: Is Pumpkin over weight?

This thread got me thinking so I weighed Cookie. She's also 2.5 lbs! I didn't think she'd get this big this fast. She is approximately 10 months old. Do I need to watch her or is she within the normal range?
