Max boars kept together

How many boars would it be safe to keep in a single cage (obviously with the correct sized cage, 2x6. I'd make it bigger though)?
I currently have two 5 month old boys and plan on rescuing one, possibly 2 more. Would this be alright, after introductions etc?

Re: Max boars kept together

I think it would be all right; I guess it would depend on the personality types of the pigs. A friend of mine in the past kept 5 boars together. They seemed to get along fine, but they where all very calm boys, not as agressive as some.

I think there are some people on this forum that keep more that 2 boars together so hopefully they will see this and shead some light on it.

Re: Max boars kept together

I have 4 boars in a 3x8. Dodger and Mr. Wiggles are pretty calm, Chopper usually only tussles with Harry when Harry is acting like a horse's you-know-what towards the other 2. Which he does on a pretty constant basis. He may be only a little pig (800 grams) but he is The Big Pig and he makes sure EVERYONE knows it, including me. There is plenty of room in the cage and he usually gives up chase after a few grids.

If you are going to get more boars, just make the cage as large as you possibly can. Don't give them any reason to be ugly towards each other. I think that is part of the reason there hasn't been any knock-down-drag-out fights between any of them. There is plenty of run away room.

Re: Max boars kept together

I have 4 boars in an L shaped cage. It is a 2x5/2x2. I then have a 1x5 loft, and then a 1x2 hay loft. My pigs ages are...7 1/2, 5 1/2, 3, and almost one. Two are dominant and 2 are submissive.

Re: Max boars kept together

I have three boars in a 3x4 cage with an extra 1x2 of space tagged onto one side. Two are fairly aggressive, but the one is definitely top pig. The middle one rumbles every single day and tries to bug the youngest one. The young one won't let the others walk all over him so that's good.

I too believe the key is space space space. If you can go three grids wide rather than 2 I think it helps a lot!!! The width really gives them more space to run away from each other. Each of my boys takes their own spot in the cage - their own corner or territory so to speak and they get along fairly well.

You just have to be prepared for the fact that they might not get along, and be certain you have the resources and space to house them apart if they fight. In that case, 4 piggies might be a good thing, because if they didn't get along, maybe you could have 2 pairs of two and divide your big cage into two.

Introductions are very important with any piggie - but boars especially so in my opinion. I know most say only use a buddy bath as a last resort, but I have had great luck with using buddy baths when introducing my boys. I think it helps to have them all smell the same. Be very careful to have a large neutral space to introduce them in - with lots of veggies and/or hay to distract them. clean the cage thoroughly so there won't be any scents left in it and move things around so it seems like a brand new cage. Make sure they have lots of food to distract them when you put them in the cage together. Make it an all day event - where you are available to watch them for the whole day to make sure all goes well.

Please make sure to quarantine any new additions for at least 3 weeks: Guinea Lynx :: Quarantine

If you can, choose boars with more laid back, submissive personalities. Good luck!

Re: Max boars kept together

I have 3 in a 2x5 with a 1x4 loft (to get stuff up off the main floor and out of their way) and I'm thinking about adopting a 4th one once I expand my cage.

I really think it depends on space. I have hides that are all bent grids so they have 2 exits. no pigloos!
