Rabbits and GP's

Is it OK to have a rabit in the same room as the GP's I mean like, s/he (the rabbit) will be free range so can go right up to the pigs through the mesh. S/he probably wont spend much time in there anyway coz s/he is going to be free range all over the house (apart from the kitchen where th cat food/water/litter pan is).

Yes, they can be in the same room together but they should not be able to touch each other. That includes sniffing through cage bars. If your cages are on the floor you may have to set up a partition to keep the rabbit at a safe distance.

Why can't they sniff each other? I know nothing about rabbits, but I really want to get a pair sometime in the future...after I learn about them that is.

Re: Rabbits and GP's

I'm not sure but before you adopt a rabbit I have heard it's best to get them checked out at a vets for that Bordella bacteria that can be pasted onto Guinea Pigs?

Re: Rabbits and GP's

There are a few diseases that rabbits can pass to GPs (and vice verse). Bordetella is one of them. Another is Pasteurella. Rabbits can be carriers of Pasteurella and never show the symptoms or get physically ill from it but to GPs it is normally fatal. There is a test that can be used to test for pasteurella but unfortunately it is known to give false negatives and can't be trusted.

It is best not to risk it. I have rabbits and GPs. The rabbits' cages and litter pans (they are free range house rabbits) are in the same room with the GPs but they have never met the rabbits. The GPs' cage is up high and the rabbit's cage is beneath it. I am careful that they never share water bottles, toys or food bowls. Everything is kept separate. Both my rabbits seem perfectly healthy and show no signs of pasteurella or bordetella but it's better to play it safe.

Re: Rabbits and GP's
